Question:
Does anyone still have that one/two cup of decaff or reg coffee for the day?

I usually have two decaffs with splenda and a tsp of light cream which is 10 calories, anyone else doing this? I'm up for surgery this Weds and my doctor said decaff is fine.    — Dina M. (posted on April 20, 2002)

Dina... Oh...I just can't LIVE without my coffee...I drink the REAL thing too...I love my GOOD, expensive, chi-chi, coffee (at the moment it is Door County Breakfast Blend YUM!)and have 1 20 oz travel mug a day with 2 spoons of real sugar. I have to have 1 thing a day that's REAL and full of flavor. If you drink caffeinated beverages, just make sure to get in enough fluid for the day.

HI, for the first 3months I avoided coffee and drank green tea for two reasons, green tea is good for your new stoma and secondly I quit smoking and I didn't want to drink coffee to soon because I would assoicate drinking coffee while smoking a cigarette. Anyway, Iam 17 weeks out and I now have been drinking my coffee in the morning. Just one small cup actually because I get too full and won't eat my breakfast. I don't put extra sweetener in it because the butter pecan creamer is sweet enough!! AAAHHH, my coffee tastes soooo good in the morning and it makes me feel like everything is back in order in my life!! It amazes me how creatures of habit we are and how the little things mean so much to us!! Just remember MODERATION is truly the key!! Its that simple!!! God Bless you on your Journey you are about to embark on!!!!!

I am 5 days post op and I have had a cup of decaf coffee with skim milk and stevia(sweetner) the past two mornings with no problems. My nutrionist said decaf was okay, but I should stay away from caffinated beveraged since they act as diurects....even with the coffee I cannot spell!! Ha!

Hi Dina: My dr is of the school that if it is working for you, keep at it. SOOOOO therefore, hot caffinated tea with milk works for me. I drink about 6 cups during my 14 hour work day. I try and get in another 30 ozs of my water drinks,(water w/lemon), but the caffeine has never slowed my weight loss AT ALL...8 mos post op and down #126, it is slowing down just a bit, but I think that is normal for the stage that I am at now. I have drank caffeine since the day I came home from the hospital....What works for one dr or patient, will not work for the next.....GOOD LUCK ON WEDNESDAY!!!! our prayers are with you the whole way!!!!

I have had regular cofee since about the second month. I actually could not stand the taste right after I came home from the hospital, which was a shock since I have always been a coffe drinker! I started again as I needed that morning kick. I have usually two or three cups in the morning (thank GOD for automatic timers! LOL! The smell leads me to the kitchen before I open my eyes)however, I have switched to decaf during the day when I am craving some. I add some cinnamon to the grinds for a treat and to get rid of the bitterness that decaf may have. Anyway, I have lost 116 pounds in 10 months, 5 pounds below goal, so I guess coffee hasn't hurt me much so far! Oh, I love the Land O Lakes FF half n Half...best of luck to you...

As a life long coffee drinker it was very hard for me to deal with the whole decaffeinated thing, so I had NO coffee whatsoever the first 5 weeks after surgery! What a horrible time that was! LOL! Now, I am a little over 3 months postop, and I stop every am on my way to work and get 12 oz of steamed skim milk with ESPRESSO in it, and I use sweetner instead of sugar, but its so yummy I dont care! I reheat it in the microwave at least 3 times during my day (I only work til 130) This is a good way for me to get in some nutrition also, as I would never drink skim milk plain! So every treat has its rationalization! Good Luck! Donna

I make myself a cup of regular coffee every morning. Its my favorite time of the day. I rarely drink it all, usually because I'm on this site and I get so wrapped up in all the posts, my coffee usually goes cold lol. I don't worry a bit about the little bit of caffeine I'm taking in. I wouldn't drink a huge amount but I think a cup of day is certainly harmless in most cases. I'm 4 months post op, down 70 lbs and 58 to goal, so I think I'm doing ok.

I have a cup a day of sugar free, fat free, decaffenated International House of Coffee's French Vanilla or Cafe Vienna. It gives me that mental coffee fix.

YES!!! I drink decaf with sugar free french vanilla creamer and Splenda. It's delicious, and cures my coffee craving. I was at Books-a-Million the other day, and the smell got to me. I ordered a decaf with skim milk, over ice, and put a dash of cinammon and a couple Splenda packets (which I carry with me) in it. I was in HEAVEN!

My coffee is the one thing I absolutely refuse to give up. I drink a "mug" of coffee every morning while getting ready for work. Sometimes I finish off the whole mug, sometimes I just sip about half. I use fat free half and half and splenda. After that, I'm finished for the day. It's my kick in the pants in the morning to get me going. Can't do w/o it. No de-caf here, it's the real stuff. Five + months out, down 75.

Dina, first, congratulations to you! I'll be thinking about you on Wed. Next, YES! I still drink coffee. In fact, I drink more now than I did pre-op. I have at least 2 cups of caffinated coffee every day, always with creamer (vanilla/toffee/caramel is my fav). My doctor says coffee is just fine, he really has no restrictions on food or drinks. And he knows his stuff, he's been doing weight loss surgeries for nearly 30 years! Like a previous poster said, if it works, why change it? Good luck on Wed!
