Question:
Did anyone go back to college after surgery?
I'm a stay at home mom and wife, and wanting to go back to college to become a nurse. I was wondering if there are anyone out there that did just that after surgery? — Dina M. (posted on April 3, 2002)

Dina, I went back to school 9 years ago when I was 35 to get my LVN. I
plan to go back after surgery, probably next Spring to get my RN. Go for
it! It's much easier when you are older....we have more self discipline
and don't care about the all-night parties anymore! LOL. Good Luck!

Hi. I am currently in college in NJ. I plan on having a LAP RNY this
summer, hopefully in June, and i will return to college in September for my
senior year. I can't wait to go back to college with a "new me!"
Hope this helps

I had LapRNY on Jan 15th of this year. I was enrolled in nursing school
at the time. I did drop out because the surgery was a little more than I
thought I could handle but I am going back to school this fall. I too am a
stay at home mother. Good luck

Hi there....I too went back to school after my RNY on November 13. I went
back for the spring semester and it is kicking my butt. I am taking way to
much. On Monday and Wednesday's I take water aerobics, on Tuesday and
Thursday's I have a counseling class and on Saturday's I have a biology
class all day long. These classes are in addition to my 40 hour work
week.....needless to say, I think I am pushing myself a little bit too
hard. So my suggestion is to take 1 class at first, so you don't over load
like I have!

I was in school at the time of my surgery, in addition to being employed
full-time, and a widowed Mom of two young girls. If I can do it, you can
do it! Good luck!

Hi, I'm in college and will be having Lap DS on May 29th. I'll be
returning to school in the Fall (end of August) and I think I'll be okay,
but I might get one of those bookbags that look like carry-on luggage (so I
can roll it around). I'm looking forward to surprising everyone too, L. ;)
Good luck Dina!

I had open rny 1/29/02 and took off 1 quarter (winter) to recover. I
started back this week taking 18 credits and am doing great! I just take a
couple of water bottles and a couple of snacks! Best of luck.

I was in the middle of a term when I had my surgery. I just did my work
ahead two weeks and had my surgery and picked it right back up. I have
more energy now to do it than i did before. Going back to school is a big
committment and it takes a lot of time and effort. Good luck to you!

Hi! I got my AA degree but put off my last 2 classes to transfer to Cal
State (for my BA). I haven't been going to school for the dumbest reason --
I don't fit in the tiny desk/chairs they have! And most of the classrooms
at my college don't have tables with the chairs not attached. After my Lap
RNY on May 3rd, I plan on going back to college probably in Spring of 2003
to finish up these last 2 classes. I don't think I'll be small enough yet
by the time classes start this August/September. :o)

I had just finished my first semester in a PhD program at Arizona State
University when I had my surgery (Dec. 2000). I had it done during my
winter break and started right back to school for spring semester. I
actually took off about two weeks before the end of the fall semester to go
back to Chicago (where I had surgery) for pre-op testing. Overall, I missed
very little school, and I felt OK. I also got a bookbag with wheels so I
wouldn't have to carry all those books or lift a heavy book bag. I did have
a LAP RNY, so my recovery may have been a little faster than someone who
has had an open. Judge how you feel, but you should be able to go to school
if you want. Good luck

I did. I started school in August of 2003, after having my surgery in
January 2003. I would have started earlier, but the first day of spring
semester started on the same day as my surgery!!
