Question:
Is developing osteoporosis prevalent in RNY Gastric By-Pass patients?
I have noticed others mentioning osteoporosis after having RNY surgery. I had my surgery 3 1/2 years ago and was diagnosed as having osteopenia almost a year ago. I have been using the generic Fosamax and have developed constant burping as my form of indigestion. Am looking for solutions if my doctor insists on me continuing with that prescription and it is the most affordable med for this problem. I am 66 years old and am on Medicare. I have inquired at the pharmacy about possibly using Reclast which is given in an annual injection. Looking for others with the same diagnosis and what has helped them. Looking for answers. Osteoporosis is common after having RNY surgery. The one thing my doctor
has told me that I need to take extra calcium with vit D everyday. Since
the surgery prevents you taking more then 650mg at a time, your system will
not absorb more then this. So I take 20ml of liquid form of Calcium and D
twice/day, about 2-3 hours before and after your multivitamin; this is
important also. Plus I also take 5000 UI of D extra, since I live in
Canada.
