Question:
I had the surgery in October 2009 and tonight I ate
about 1/4 of a sandwich and now I am in pain. I tried getting sick but couldn't and I don't need to use the restroom. Has anyone experienced this?.. Please help! — jackielr (posted on February 25, 2010)

If you drink what happens? A time or two I overate but, lets say 3 bites,
because I was in a hurry and didnt go slow and listen to my body say whoa.
On the couple of rare occations I took a few sips and it helped, but they
were sips. Just enough to moisten what was in my stomach and hopefully
help moe it along quicker.

Of course, I am unfamiliar with what type of sx you had (I am postop RNY),
so this may sound silly, but my surgeon/NUT actually suggest having a can
(or small bottle) of Diet Coke on hand for this very reason. They claim
that the carbonation in the coke, as well as the acidic components of the
Coke will result in whatever is leaving you feeling uncomfortable to be
flushed through your your bypassed system rather quickly. Personally, I
have not had to try this actual method as yet myself, but know from others
that it does work. Why not try (assuming you are post-RNY)? After all,
Coke is known to eat through paint on cars, so I am sure it can do
something for "stuck" food. Good luck!

I wonder if it was the bread. My surgeon says no bread or pasta.

I still can't really eat bread unless its toasted and I'm over 2 years
out!! It probably just made that dough ball in your stomach, no fun!! It
should pass thru but just takes a while and feels like a brick. Sometimes
hot tea would help settle my stomach (caffiene free). Sorry I couldnt be
any more help.

Either you ate one too many bites or most likely the bread got stuck..
white bread especially will turn into a dough ball in the pouch and wont
pass and hurts like the dickins.. I have a bottle of chewable papaya
enzymes for just such occasions, papaya is a natural digestion aid and will
help digest whatever is stuck.. I would suggest getting some.. if not get
some adolph meat tenderizer and mix it with a little water and drink a
little of that.. it helps if it is meat that is stuck.. but I highly
recommend the papaya it will work for most anything. .. Sorry I am so late
in posting. I hope what ever you had stuck has passed by now.. but for the
future get the papaya enzyme and have it on hand... and remember to eat
slow and chew chew chew and stay away from white bread or white pasta..and
white rice too.. they all three are subject to getting stuck.. and anyway
they are not the good carbs to eat..

I HAVE THE EXACT SAME PROBLEM IF I EAT BREAD OR I JUST EAT TOO FAST . I'VE
EVEN GONE IN THE WASHROOM AND PUT MY FINGER DOWN MY THROAT TO TRY AND BRING
IT OUT . I DON'T MEAN TO BE SO STRAIGHT FORWARD BUT I TOO DON'T KNOW HOW TO
DEAL WITH THIS . I'M 1 YEAR POST OP AND THIS HAS IMPROVED . IN A WAY I LIKE
THIS PROBLEM BECAUSE IT'S A SOLID REMINDER IF I'M NOT PAYING ATTENTION TO
WHAT OR HOW I'M EATING . I'M SORRY I CAN'T BE MORE HELP , I JUST WANTED YOU
TO KNOW YOUR NOT ALONE . GOOD LUCK WITH YHIS ........ROGER

When I get this I drink water lots of it. This will either flush out what I
ate or make it come up. Either way I am out of pain. This si a hard thing
to adjust to sometimes. We get in a hurry and now if I am rushed I just
avoid eating until I have more time. I keep small bags of nuts on hand to
get me through until I have time to eat properly. the pain is not worth the
hurry.

I am post RNY (08/03/2009) and I experienced the same thing last night. I
had just eaten 3 tablespoons of sugar free banana nut ice cream when I
started having severe pain in my stomach. I could only take 2 small sips
of water because it hurt so much going down. Had the pain for about 40
mins until I threw up. I felt instant relief.
