Hi Rhonda, I am on my liquid diet (surgery is scheduled 09-March) and I have an issue with that. I'm working through it but yesterday I had a big bowl of SF jello and that got me through the day. There are hardly any calories in SF jello so would be a good thing to eat. Good luck!

I am now 8 weeks postop RNY and eat oyster crackers regularly with soup (just for the crunch consistency) as well as to have a "bite" appeal for solids!! However, I must warn you that you are not yet 3 weeks out and although your "head" tells you that you can handle something you may likely find that your pouch cannot. That said, you will quickly get the "stuck" feeling that is quite discomforting if something is not easily dissolved/digested. Finally, as yet another "tip/suggestion" -- I just found a great alternative to even oyster crackers at www.bariatriceating.com. They are called "Aged Parmesan Crisps" and 3 of these equal 7g of protein, 0 carbs and they are also made from 100% cheese with 100% crunch. A healthy and wise alternative. Lots of luck to you!! ~Trish

Hi Rhonda... I sure feel for you. I'm on "full liquids" for two more days, then I graduate to "pureed/mushies." I keep telling people "I really wanna bite something!" Ha ha ha. Sticking to the program is a good plan for a lot of reasons. 1) remember that your surgeon didn't operate on your brain! We each have to confront our desire to eat too much, and work to learn how to stick with the program. Even though with RNY we WILL lose weight for at least 6 months easily, it gets less easy down the road. In other words... we're all going to have to control the urge to eat crackers. And everyone has to walk this path for themselves. Here are some tricks that have worked for me: distract myself with the computer, with TV, with a phone call, brush my teeth, SOMETHING. Work to postpone the eating 'til later, whatever you do end up eating. Drink, drink, drink! Sometimes thirst can masquerade as hunger. Drink some more. Go work out! My surgeon cleared me to go back to the gym for cardio 10 days after surgery, he just said to not overdo it. Exercise really makes you happier. And we MUST exercise more and more as the weight comes off in order to be successful in the long haul. I also consult my list of dreams and things to avoid. You know, yours will be personal to you, but mine includes being able to stand for a whole choir concert, being able to play with my young nephews, fitting into clothes at "normal" stores, etc etc.... and my "avoids" include pain in hips, knees and feet... all kinds of health issues... you get the idea. Eyes on the prize!! Finally, I'll tell you a secret... the other day, I ate four crackers because I couldn't stand it. I felt guilty as hell, and I chewed them for a LONG time before swallowing little bites, because i didn't want to have issues. And you know what? I was fine. I haven't gone back off liquids since, but I did have to test it just that once. I don't reccomend it... I personally am scared to death of the "slippery slope" falling into old patterns WAY too soon... and I am re-committed to staying the course. yesterday, I went shopping for things to put into my blender, including soft meats. I really miss meat. I sure hope my pouch can tolerate what I bought. Oh, here's one other trick that has helped me... when I do have my liquid meals, I'm really trying to avoid cold things. For example, the BariatricEating.com "Believe" coffee drinks can be heated without a problem. So, I nuke it to as hot as I can stand, and sip it slow-w-wly. It really seems to add to satisfaction as the warm liquid fills my new small tummy. Look for tricks that keep you satisfied. Remember that protein is a long-time satisfier... get a lot in, and get some in early in your day (the "Believe" drinks have 20g). I make sugar-free instant pudding with two scoops of "unjury" unflavored protein... makes the pudding more creamy, but it still sets up fine. then when I DO need a snack, it has protein in it. BEST OF LUCK TO YOU, RHONDA! Stick with your program, you'll be glad in the long run. We have to learn new behaviors to lose weight and keep it off. Our old behaviors were OK for back then, but they got us to an unhealthy place, right? So... new body, new behaviors!
