I turned 31 the month after having surgery. No, thank god, I did not/do not live with my parents. I am married and have 2 children. But yes, they are supportive of my decision to have surgery. Just my personal thought....if you are 30 and still living with mom and dad, you might want to fix THAT situation first.

I am 27 and just had surgery 3 weeks ago. I do live with my parents. My rent helps them to pay the morgage on our house. They have been extremely supportive. I don't think it's a matter of your age and living with your parents, it all depends on your individual situation.

I was 24 and married, but did not have kids. My parents and husband were all very supportive of my decision.

I just turned 27 and had my sugery 11 days ago. i don't live with my parents. They were not really supportive, they were scared and my dad really freaked out and said I was going against his wisdom. My husband really could care less either way since he deployed to Iraq two weeks before my surgery. He didn't care as long as I was happy and he trusts my judgement, although I thin kit embarassed him to talk to people about it. Of my two best friends, one who is3 yrs post op was very supportive, and the other one who is really into homeopathic healing was against it. But the friend I had against it was still supportive enough to take me to my appointments and surgery and help me around the house and watch my two kids. My cousin is about 2 yrs post op and we talk on the phone alot. Sometimes you have to do what is best for you and your parents just have to trust you as an adult to make your own choices. They will get over it. It's only been a week and a half and my parents are acting fina about it now. There was another girl in my group that was still in high school and lived at home. Her mom was 3 yrs post op. I think it is great to do it as early as possible because you will heal faster and have less current health problems. Also as a mom I can tell you it is very difficult to go through ths with small children around. Good Luck!

I am 29 and almost three months from surgery. My mom had RNY almost four years ago and is very supportive of me having surgery. My dad has been very supportive of both of us. I do live at home right now. My husband just filed for divorce on the 30th of December. Since I married him right out of high school, I will be living with my parents while I go to school. All of this my parents are very supportive of. For non-supportive parents, I think them meeting with the surgeon or going to meetings could be helpful in easing their fears. Rachael

I was 26 when I had my surgery and it is still hard to believe that I lived by myself 6 hours away from family! Hopefully your family will be supportive no matter what. My family was just extremely worried, but it has been since July 2005 and I am still doing great!
