Some people have sd YES...but my DR & NUT sd NO...never.. ask your DR. & NUT what they advise. I would do what ever they say. I would never do anything my Dr. says not to. Best of luck to you.

I think that over time a lot of people find that they once again CAN drink carbonated beverages...but that doesn't mean that you SHOULD! I was a big time diet coke addict prior to surgery. But, in my opinion, it isn't worth the risk for screwing up the results of my surgery...just so that I can have a coke. What means more to you...soda or looking and feeling terrific? Also, fyi...sodas do not taste the same to me post-op. (Yes, I did have to take a sip or two out of curiosity. lol) I think that if I tried to get used to them again...I probably could. But WHY??? I'd just be sabotaging myself. I know they say we aren't even supposed to drink caffeine...but I've become an iced tea junkie, these days. Due to health problems and meds, I always stay thirsty. I got really tired of crystal light..so I started on iced tea..and I feel like it's certainly a better choice than soda. Trust me...you really do get used to not drinking soda..and I don't even miss it now. Good luck!

I agree with the last reply. I too was a serious diet coke addict for as long as I can remember. When I started digging into the research for my lap band surgery I learned that I would have to give it up once I had my surgery. I stopped drinking it about 2 months prior to my surgery and I can't believe how easy it was to give it up. I thought I'd never be able to stop drinking it but I have to say I don't miss it at all. Before my surgery, I did have one and it didn't taste the same and I really felt like I lost the taste for it. I am about 6.5 weeks post op right now and am just drinking crystal light and water and definitely don't miss it. I've lost 37 pounds to this point and really feel like I'm not even going to bother trying one because I don't want to jeopardize my progress. Good luck - you can do it!

Once you get off Coke after your surgery why ever go back. After RNY you cannot have carbonation for 3-6 months. I am 4 weeks out and I NEVER plan on drinking COKE again. And diet Coke is poison as the sweetner is very close to wood alcohol in chemistry. I drank real cokes prior. I do not want them anymore just like I do not want candy bars. Why go back to the drugs that made you fat? and believe me at 430 lbs I was fat. I had a ring surgery 10 years ago and regained all the weight back because of these bad choices. Just had a revision to RNY and this time I am making permanent changes because I know what will happen if I do not. Also, a heart surgeon tells me that COKE and sodas are killing people and very, very bad for the heart. Of course you are not going to hear that on TV. Just think our schools are making money selling that junk to kids every day and why? This is evil. But marketing works and COKE AND PEPSI are the kings.

I had lap-band surgery in September, and found I can have it -- but I don't really drink a lot.. just a few sips and then I'm bored with it.

I agree with the first reply-- you should seek your doctor's advice on this, as he is the only one qualified to give you this advice. I just had my one year post op check up with my doc (I am down 194 lbs in 12 months), and my doc said that something like sprite zero (which is no sugar no caffeine) would be fine and that there is no danger in drinking something which is no sugar and no caffeine. He was more concerned that I get in the required amount of liquids every day. From my personal experince, I have been drinking sprite zero for about four months, and I have experinced no streching of the pouch and have lost about 80 lbs in that time period.

I do, but I drink from a big cup, and diet coke goes flat with the melted Ice rather fast. I just sip it. Never drink from the can. the carbonation going down can hurt.

Most likely you "will" be able to, it may cause you some discomfort, but the bigger question is "should" you? The answer to that is you shouldn't. I am 6 months post RNY and have I had any carbonated drinks, Yes I have. They cause me some discomfort and are not worth it. I have found that fountain diet sodas are pretty much well tolerated if I let them sit for a few minutes and don't cover them. Bottled/canned drinks are much more difficult unless I pour them over ice and let them sit for 15-20 minutes to let the gas escape and then I usually only drink a few sips. I think it's better to drink water, Crystal Lite or similar drinks. Wal Mart makes on, Early Rise which is orange flavored and tastes fantastic. I drink about two quarts of this daily.

Trust me... stay FAR FAR AWAY from Diet Coke and other sodas!!!! I have had RNY and Lap Band and did at first drop 110 lbs no problem. Over the years, I ended up getting past that "odd" taste and have become a junkie again... have gained 60 lbs (for other reasons as well) and am DESPERATELY trying to get back on track which INCLUDES giving up soda again. If not for all of the very true and serious reasons already mentioned, simply because it makes you able to EAT MORE!!!! I can't stress this enough... don't be like me and STAY FAR FAR AWAY!!! My first surgery was 8 years ago, so this could happen at anytime (I do know not all people are me, but why take the risk???)... please be good to yourself and just stay away. Sorry, I am just very passionate about this particular subject... =)

I also have to agree stay away!! Why would you risk the great outcome of your new tool. And please remember it is just a tool you have to use it correctly in order to have long term success.... And a reply to the other post..And I don't know what school your children go to but they do not sell soda at my childrens school and they are in Jr High and High School!!

I know some people have said they can. I am nearly 14 months out and the few times I have tried, I took one sip and felt uncomfortable from all the bubbling/carbonation. So, unless you leave it set out to become flat, I don't think it is advisable.

I used to be a BIG fizz drinker & I DO miss it! But, like they say, why go back to it if you have no need to & it may have a detrimental effect? It is almost a ritual & a treat now when I take my young niece out that she has to let me have a couple of slurps of her fizz!!

Maybe it is just me but I don't get all the questions about eating and drinking things you knew going in were off the list. Is it really that hard to say no to stuff that just isn't going to help you? Questions like this make me feel like you really didn't want this and really aren't all in as they say. I went into this knowing that my life and lifestyle with food and drink is forever changed but for the better and my health and well being. I say don't do it unless your doctor says it is ok. Do you really need a corbonated beverage. ? Just my thoughts.

I'm 14 months out and occassionaly when we go out to dinner I will have a soda. I don't make a habit of it. Some days the carbonation is too much and I burp a lot from it, others it goes right down without a problem. I do find that the caffeine is more of a problem for me (keeps me up and wired), so if possible, I will drink caffeine free diet sodas.

Ok I will honestly answer this. I was a big soda drinker before surgery. I didn't drink any soda until about maybe four or five months after surgery, then I was addicted to it for about a month or two. That was ALL I wanted to drink..regular coke with ice..and I would chomp on the ice. I started drinking unsweetened tea in the summer, and quit the soda. I went to have a soda at a movie last week, after not having any for months, and it tasted DISGUSTING TO ME..like drinking straight up SUGAR. GROSS...so I guess it is all in your taste...and I drank it even though I KNEW I shouldn't be drinking it..my will power wasn't very strong. I occasionally drink a couple of sips of ginger ale, but that is about it for my soda intake now. I am almost 10 months post RNY and have lost 115 lbs...with about 30 more to go...hope this helps..

They told me to never drink any sodas so for the year I have not even tried one. There is so many other things that we can drink.

I have always been a diet Pepsi drinker and really enjoy the taste. I pour a glass in the morning and drink it when I get home from work. It is flat but it has the same flavor. Don't think I'am crazy unless you try it!!

My doc told us that it would stretch your stomach out; if you don't want to take a chance on that, don't drink anything that is 'sparkling' or bubbly period. You will learn to do without; why take a chance.
