I did not have to crush any medications, vitamins or calcium in my post op period. Unless you have difficulty in swallowing, I don't really think it's necessary. Crushing almost any medication will lead to a very nasty tasting experience. If your surgeon wants you to crush them, you may want to get a mortal & pestil, like the drugists use to blend meds.

It's four years and i still can't swallow pills...I just gag. So I used a mortar and pestle at first. Now I just break with my teeth and try not to make it too messy that I taste it! I swallowed the powder with SF applesauce or in a tiny bit of peanutbutter or cottage cheese. You might get a pill splitter and see if you can just swallow in pieces. Good luck

At most pharmacies and drug stores they sel pill splitters to cut pills in half, and also pill crushers. The pill crushers literally grind the pill up in to powder quite easily. They cost about 4 or 5 dollars.

Hi Dana, I too had trouble with my pills. and now what i do, is for the two capsules i have to take, i just put them in a spoon on top of some yogurt.. and i don't have any problems with pills anymore. i know it is frustrating.. hang in there, it will get better...try the yogurt, you really don't taste the meds. Good Luck...

the majority of prescription medication can not and should not ever be crushed or cut in half -- always ask your pharmacist first -- most medications are time released -- if you crush these or cut these then you will not be getting the full theraputic value of your medication -- the only pills that can be crushed are vitamins and minerals since they are not time released -- if you crush or cut a medication that should not be you can risk overdose -- please talk to your doctor or pharmacist

Hello! I had lapband surgery in January and I was informed in my nutrition class that all medication had to be either crushed or in liquid form. I was told to check with my physician ahead of time to see what can be crushed and what couldn't. After surgery, my bariatric surgeon told me that if I had to take a tylenol, I could just break it in half and swallow it. I have two timed released medications that could not be broken (prilosec and detrol), but since I have lost weight, I no longer have to take them. I have a pill crusher and sprinkling the crushed pills on my pureed food works just fine. Now that I'm down to two small pills, I can just break them in half and sip them with water about an hour or two before breakfast. I now buy liquid motrin and liquid tylenol for times that I need them. Wishing you the best!

Hi, I use a marble mortar and pestel. I can crush my meds into a fine powder... I do like with a BC powder and just put the powder as far back on my tongue as possible and take a few sips of a beverage to get them down. Generally there is no problem. Now that I am over three months out, my surgeon has told me that it is fine to swallow the pills as I had in the past. Good Luck

Hey Dana, I am on my 5th day post op and yes there is one acid blocker that I need to crush and had a problem with. I ended up just letting it dissolve in a little water or milk to soften up enough to crush between 2 spoons and then i just mix it with a little yogurt or cream of wheat. Hope this helps.

No problem with doing the crushing. Trying to swallow that nasty tasting, crushed stuff was my problem. My doctors saied I should crush my meds until I found that I could tolerate taking them whole again. It took me about two days to try the whole meds, to see how it might go down (and STAY down) because I was bringing the crushed meds up almost as soon as I tried to gag it down. I had no problem and it's been whole meds ever since. Try it! You may find that you also can tolerate whole (not crushed) meds without a hitch.

Hi Dana, Great question, and great answers. Definately go with the mortar and pestal method, but a garlic press will do in a pinch. You may already have one of those. Some meds really should not be crushed. Ask your pharmacist if there is a liquid form, or if there is an alternative med. that you can take that has a liquid form. Then call your primary care physician and have him phone it in. Let us know how this works out for you. Best wishes. Lois

Please, please, please ask your pharmacist which pills can be crushed, disolved, or split. As another poster said, some medicines have a special coating on them. There are many other meds that you might get as liquid or in some other form. But ask before you alter your meds. You pay too much to waste them by using them incorrectly. Julie

I stopped 'crushing' them, doc said i could chew it, and it didn't have to be powder, just broken up. What a difference!
