Most obese people do and that is why the RNY'ers usually have to lose
several pounds before they can be safely operated on. Your surgery is
done...and as you lose weight your liver should too..

The only thing that can shrink your liver is reducing your carbs. My
surgeon has his patients go on a 30 gram/day low carb diet for 4 weeks
prior to surgery for the purpose of shrinking the liver so it can be
manipulated much easier during the surgery.

I think he was explaining to your husband why you may have taken longer
than he originally expected for the surgery. The first fat to go is from
the liver. If you were dieting just before surgery your liver should have
been OK, but it is hard to work on the stomach as it is under the liver and
it is a hard to lift the liver if there is a lot of fat. I am sure you are
fine now that you had WLS and are loosing. Just ask your Surgeon.

All that fat you can 'see' on the outside is bad enough. The unseen fat
surrounding you internal organs is even more harmful to your state of
health. People who 'show' a great deal of fat around their waistlines (men
usually) are at greater risk than those who tend to carry extra poundage
predominantly around their hips (women as a rule). Getting rid of all that
visible excess fat on the outside means that it is also disappearing from
around your liver and other internal organs. Losing weight just PRIOR to
surgery reduces, to some degree, fat deposits around those organs, making
the gastric surgery easier for the surgeon and making things less risky for
you and the anesthesiologist. Fear not! As you lose 'skin' weight AFTER
surgery, the fat around your liver (and other organs too) will decrease as
well. And that's a VERY good thing -- for you and your husband.

I would love to work with you on healthy eating solutions. Yes, you can
reduce your fatty liver by losing the weight, but just losing weight and
not addressing nutrition does not mean health. I coach many people from
many backgrounds on healthy nutrition, I am an RN and would love to explore
that with you if you are interested! YOu can email me at [email protected]

Even thin people can have a fatty liver. It is from eating fatty foods and
not exercising. When you lose weight and start exercising more, the liver
will shrink though. Did your doctor say anything about your liver enzymes
being elevated?

Fatty liver goes down with fat loss = weight loss. When we are fat (me
too) fat goes everywhere including into liver and pancreas pushes on vital
arteries and organs - that is why being obese is bad for your health.
You'll be fine - every morbid obese person has it.
