Question:
Signs that connection split

2 weeks post-op: is it possible to split the bypass by over drinking/eating and how would you know if you harmed the new pouch?    — DONNA W. (posted on June 29, 2007)

Have you seen the nutritionist yet? If you stay on the diet they gave you for the 1st month at least, I don't know how you could hurt anything. Don't just start eating and drinking like there is no tomorrow, you will make yourself sick. What's worse it will affect you mentally as well. The rules are there for a reason. Don't spend a fortune then blow it all away.

I'm not sure that you can "split" the bypass but there is a very strict diet post surgery that should be followed very closely. You can stretch the pouch by drinking with meals. You are supposed to not drink until 30 minutes after eating the very small portions...please call your dietician.

Hi Donna, thanks for writing. The answer to your question, is yes you can rupture your pouch, but not easily that is for sure. I did hear of a story of a man who ate an entire bucket of KFC chicken, and he did rupture his pouch. The lust for food is so very big isn't it? But let me say this, if you had ruptured something, you probably wouldn't be writing a question, but calling 911. It would be severe. Call your surgeon, and check in, but also check your habits and put some boundaries into what you are doing. It is a fight, the fight of your life Donna, get prepared to fight for your health. No one ever said (in our circles) that wls is easy, it is a tool and a battle. So, get up and fight, you can do it, and you are worth it. Take care. Patricia P.

HI Donna, You would be in so much pain if you over ate to the point of poping stapples, that you would stop yourself. Unless you had a death wish, this IS the hardest part changing what was your life. It feels kind of like a spanking when you were a kid after you had gotten hurt already. The faer of poping something is not so bad though it will keep you on track. Good luck and get well soon. Anna

2 weeks post op you should be on liquids only. If you just up and eat a hamburger yes you could end up in the ER or do damage. You have to let the pouch heal just because it looks well on the outside does not mean it is healed and strong on the inside. DO WHAT THE DOCTOR TOLD YOU TO DO!! NO EXCEPTIONS
