Question:
Needing more protein ideas...
I am a week out and need protein drink ideas. I bought a big jug of vanilla flavored protein, what a waste of money it was awful. I really like the liquid whey protein that is fruit punch flavored but it is too expensive for me to have everyday. Any ideas? — missyheffelfinger (posted on March 17, 2007)

Hi Missy,
I am 41/2 years out and my favorite protein drink is Iso-Pur chocolate. I
mix banana with it, most of the time, but I have also added yogurt and
raspberrys, instant coffee and other different flavors. I really like it
and I use 1% milk instead of the water also. Hope this helps. good luck
in your quest for a new you!! Your life is just beginning.

I would have to agree with the Iso Pure. It is a bit more expensive, but
worth it. I like the Iso Pure drinks. They are clear, flavored and have
between 40 and 60 grams of protien in each.
Good luck, and best wishes for a speedy recovery.

I LIKE PROTEIN DELITE! CHOCLATE IS THE ONLY FLAVOR I'VE TRIED! IT WAS
GREAT. THEY SELL IT @ VITAMIN SHOPPE.

I go to the vitamin shoppe and everytime I go it's $25 bucks for one visit.
I like the Isopure No Carb clear protein drinks as well and I'll pour an
entire bottle in an emply 1 liter bottle of water and add water to the
rest. DON'T BUY THE ORANGE -- NASTY. The apple melon and grape are my
favorites. I also purchse the lean body chocolate protein drink -- you can
get two dinners out of that if you're drink 8 ounce because thouse are 17
ounces bottles. The WideWorld protein drinks are good as well -- I've
tried the Strawberry and it was good -- I haven't purchased any others.
The one thing I've discovered is they taste better when you don't drink
them out of the can. I purchased a mixture from Vitamin Shoppe -- cost
about 8 bucks -- and I'll pour the drink in that and mix it some more and
it tastes better. A friend of mine likes Extreme Smoothie -- Vitamin
Shoppe carries the strawberry -- tried it -- wasn't that impressed. You
might want to look up Unjury -- they gave us this protein at our seminar
and I haven't used it yet. I believe you can look up unjury online -- I
believe its www.unjury.com -- if it isn't email me directly and I'll get
the correct information for you.

I personally don't like Isopure. It seems like so many people like it but
I think it tastes horrible but to each his own. If I were you, you should
try buying just sample packs from websites like www.bariatriceating.com
and www.vitalady.com they have samples you can get for like a dollar to try
them. Sometimes if you go to support groups people will exchange samples
or maybe you can ask your nutritionist or doctors office for some. My
nutritionist has a big basket in her office when I go and she always tells
me to take what I want. I can tell you some good ones to try but like I
said everyone likes different things. I like the Any whey protein powder
which is like 17g per scoop and it's absolutely flavorless so you can add
it to stuff and you can't taste it. I also love protein delight protein
powder. Almost every flavor i've ever tried was delicious. I also like
the herbalife protein powders but they are pretty expensive. Matrix simply
vanilla, perfect chocolate, orange cream, and cookies and cream is really
good. I've tried the nectar proteins and I personally don't like them
either but I know alot of people do so it all depends what you like. You
can also add things to make the protein shakes taste better like milk,
fruit ever sugar free puddings or coffee. So I hope I've helped. You take
care and good luck. Jeannie

There is a new protein "shot". 3 ounces has 42 grams of protein
in it. I have not tried it myself yet because I just found out about it.
But two drinks a day would almost be everything you need for a day. The
best part is one drink is only 3 ounces. I found it at
bariatricsupermarket.com. It isn't cheap. A case of 12 (which would be 12
days worth if you drank 2 servings a day) is $37.60. Hope this helps

Hi Missy, I too went through that with different proteins and spent ALOT of
money before I found one that I LOVE...It is Optimum Nutrition Gold
Standard 100% Instantized Whey. You mix it with milk-and each flavor I have
purchased has been wonderful. They make ALL different kinds and sell them
in 2# or 5# tubs. My favorite is the strawberry, but the vanilla and
chocolate are great as well. You can purchase this at Food 4 Less for $14
for the 2# and $27 for the 5#. If you do not live near a Food 4 Less-you
can purchase it at a health food store-but ours here is about twice the
price as Food 4 Less. You can also get it through allstarhealth.com for the
same price as F4L, but you do have flat shipping rate of 5.95.
I also make protein balls-and snack on them during the day. They are easy
to make and taste like you are getting a treat. They are like no-bake
cookies-and my whole family loves them! I will include the recipe for you
and good luck! Janet
Protein Balls:
2 Cups Peanut Butter-(Jiffy or Skippy works best)
1 Cup Oatmeal (the big old fashioned oats)
1 Cup Protein powder-vanilla or chocolate (one that you like)
3/4 cup Splenda
warm peanut butter in microwave for 40 seconds, add everything else and mix
well. Roll into walnut sz balls. you can either refridgerate or put in
tupperware sealed container Each ball is 10-12 g of protein.

I, too, bought a big jug of vanilla Isopur protein a week post-op (12 weeks
now) and thought it was a waste. But I decided to use it anyway. I bought
sugar free choc syrup, s/f coconut syrup, and s/f irish cream. SOmetimes I
add instant decaf coffee too. THen I put one scoop of the protein powder in
and you can't taste it. I start out with 1/2 cup n/f milk, 2 splenda, and
then add frozen strawberries, then protein. I mix it up every day, some
days I feel like a "mocha shake" other days I put frozen
pineapple and s/f coconut syrup and have "pina coloada"... it
helps me, I hope it helps you! :)

I've found the Unjury to be pretty good. The unflavored doesn't have that
protein taste. Try adding it to jello or pudding or even crystal light. The
strawberry & Choc. are decent too. There's another product I bought off
of TV called AmazeRx. I got the Mocha Java flavor, which is awesome! The
Vanilla is ok. I want to try their strawberry and Choc. You can get it off
their website. Amazerx.com. I mix mine with skim milk. It tastes like a
milkshake, and was developed by a bariatric doctor made especially for
people like us who had surgery.

Your protein intake is really important. You have to either submit to the
expense of something you like, or find other sources of protein. I stuck
to food myself, but if your doc wants you on liquid for a few weeks, you
should get what you can drink. Unfortuneately it is hard to tell what you
will like post surgery. What we tolerate before surgery is not always what
we can tolerate after. I say get the fruit punch and do that for a few
weeks, I know it is expensive, but it is your ONLY source of food, so get
something you can drink. Take care, Patricia P

I can't afford the expensive protein drinks and can only afford a big jug
of the vanilla protein from Wal-mart. I did find something that really
works for me. Banana. When I add banana to whatever I make with the
powder I can't taste the funky protein taste, just whatever I put in it.
The nasty smell that the protein powder has is still there so if you try
the protein with banana in drink form make sure it's in a bottle so that
you can't smell it when you drink. I like to mix the powder with milk,
banana and other fruit and blend it into a "smoothie" or make
banana cream pudding and add protein. Hope this helps.

I just checked out the website: Amazerx.com and caffeine is listed in the
ingredients. Caffeine is a no no for me. I think there are too many carbs
in this whey protein as well. Def. ask your nut. if this is something you
should have. I will stay away from it, personally.

If what you have is vanilla powder protein try mixing it with some kind of
flavored liquid. I like to mix mine with Crystal Light......orange
sunrise, cherry and strawberry are my favorite. It gives the vanilla
powder a whole new taste. Hope this helps. Laura A.

Hi there- another option is protien water. There is a special k brand of
this water and its pretty good. Its an alternative to the thicker drinks.
I like the lemon twist one heated up and drink like a hot tea!
