Question:
What do I need to take to the hospital?
I am hoping to have my surgery at the end of October or beginning of November and have no clue as to what I might need to take to the hospital. What should I wear home? — marci0119 (posted on September 24, 2006)

I haven't had my surgery yet but I had lap surgery in Feb and you will need
to wear something loose fitting without a zipper, i suggest warm up suit or
loose elastic waist pants. Your tummy will be swollen from the surgery and
it will take a few weeks to get back to normal.

Here is my list. Mine is larger because I will be in there a week or so. I
just put it all here in case there is somthing you can use.
Best of luck with your surgery!!
Lip balm,
baby wipes or antibacterial wipes to freshen up,
trial size of powder,
trial size baby lotion or favorite lotion,
small shampoo and conditioner,
brush,
toothbrush and paste,
hair ties,
dove soap, (I can't use other soaps well)
deodorant,
insurance card and paperwork,
your own pillow w/colored case (this will be handy for the ride home too),
lose clothes to wear home,
camera in case you want to document the journey,
phone numbers in case you want to call family/friends,
sanitary napkins (a lot of women will start their cycle right after
surgery),
medication list,
eye covering (if light bothers you),
earplugs (if noise bothers you),
pictures of family or loved ones,
portable DVD player with DVDs or CDs,
small fan (I can't sleep without a fan so I found this little one to take
with me),

Warmups -- something loose that want press against the incisions.

Hospital air is sooooo dry!!! Take some saline nasal spray, lip balm, and
possibly some visine too. My nose was so dry that it was painful! Some
lotion wouldn't hurt either.

Definitely wear something very loose. I live in California and had my
surgery on Dec 29 of 2002 so it's always on the warmer side here. I wore a
sleeveless long dress with a little matching jacket and a pair of slip on
shoes (like mules). I'd say sweats might be uncomfortable because of the
incision, depending on how loose or how tight they are around youe waist
and if you have open or lap surgery.
Hospital air is VERY dry - take lip stuff and nasal spray.
They provide all your toiletries, but take whatever you want if you have a
preference for lotions and the like.
Socks - my toes were FROZEN
A calling card - hospital calls are expensive! Or take you cell phone and
remember your charger! Some hospitals are more strict than others about
the "no cellphone" rule, but everytime I've been hosptialized no
one ever bugged me about it.
Advance Directive - we have to make sure that, in the odd event, we're
taken care of. Awful to think about, but more awful if our families don't
know what we want and have to make decisions for us
I hope this helps!

Hi,
I just had my surgery a month ago and i had and open ro-en-y with stomach
stapling done. I took all kinds of stuff to the hospital..makeup shampoo
clothes etc..and let me tell you..when it came time to clean up..i used
what the hospital provided..no shower while i was there which was 2 days
and they let me have one the day i came home..my stuff stayed in the car
until time to come home and then after using their stuff to clean up a bit
i put on a summer type dress for compfort and came home...trust me...your
not going to care much if you are having the same surgery i did...i mean
you will want to freshen up while using the restroom but the hospital does
provide stuff for that and no matter how picky you are normal..the hospital
stuff will work just fine for you then.
Good luck to ya!

Wear loose clothes home.
Take to the hospital: a robe and slippers (you need to walk, walk, walk!),
maybe some crossword puzzle books, or novels, whatever you enjoy doing.
Hospitals are very boring. If you have a CPAP machine, take that.
Other than that, no much.

I used a LOT of chap stick! It really saved my dry lips! I brought a loose
pair of jammies, robe and slippers. I ended up wearing the jammies home
because they were most comfy! I basically used a comb, brush and
toothbrush! I didn't shower untill I was home...Best of Luck on your
surgery...Monica, 10/05 down 105 lbs!
