Question:
having trouble again over 3 years out

when I was a yr out (RNY, Nov. 14, 2002) I started having pains now and again,( I could get a couple a day or once a month, they came when they wanted too.) excrutiating pains, top part of my abdomin, I would sweat, it would feel like someone was tightening something around my ribs. I had tests done, showed nothing. Next step exploritory surgery. The surgeon (same one who did my RNY) started lap, then had to open me up, he said I had a lots of scar tissue, which he removed all that he could, he was thinking that was causing my pain. I had surgery on a monday, came home wednesday. By friday each time I ate or drank I would be in such pain, the burning up my throat and into my mouth was unreal, 100 times worse than reflux. It also felt like the food was backing up also into my throat. So he had me go to the ER friday night for a cat scan, the stuff that I drank for the cat scan hurt when drinking it, . They admitted me. The next morning another cat scan, I could only take a sip of the stuff, it was to painful, but It ended up not being a blockage in my bowels which he thought it might of been,, it actually was where they connect the small bowel to our pouches the small bowel goes through a hole they make in the mesocolon , it had totally tightened up and was closing off my small bowel. So back into surgery again monday moring, I was terrified, " These 2 surgeries took place this past FEB 2006", But I was hoping that this was it, my pains would be gone forever, GUESS WHAT there BACK,, I have had 2 attacks since then, one in June, and one yesterday while I was volunteering at the hospital that I had my surgeries in,,, it was AWFUL, I was in so much pain, I volunteer in the surgical check in. They rushed me back to preop and when my surgeon was done with his surgery he came and spoke with me,,, he has absolutely no idea what is going on, he has referred me to another surgeon which I made an appointment with. I go in 3 weeks,,, I just pray they can find what is causing this and take care of it, and that it is something minor and not something serious,,,,, has anyone out there every heard of what Im going through? I had my gallbladder removed when I had my RNY. Its also not hernias, had those repaired a couple of years ago after the pains started, so even they were not the cause of the pain. Thanks everyone for taking the time to read this and reply.    — Amy Hoffman (posted on August 26, 2006)

Hi Amy, I am 2 1/2 years out. RNY 1/04 Have you had your gall bladder out? I was getting fevers and feeling like I had the flu everyother week. couldnt figure it out. Then one nite I thought I had gotten something stuck by not chewing it enough. I waited a few days before I finally went to the hospital. They did a cat scan and xray, ultra sound, found out it was my bladder. I was in so much pain tylenol with codine didnt help. They put me on some serious pain meds and took out my ballder the next day. I fell so much better now. No fevers or pain. Maybe your balder is ready to come out.

As I was reading your post I was also thinking it could be the gall bladder, but I assumed your surgeon checked it at the first sign of pain. My gall bladder was removed during my RNY and it got rid of all my indigestion, heartburn, acid reflux, etc. However, my sister in law has never had a gastric bypass but began having gall bladder attacks which she described much like what you are explaining. If you haven't had it checked, that could be the problem. Otherwise, I haven't heard anyone else with this. I think it was wise of your surgeon to recommend you to someone else since he can't find the problem. Best of luck to you. Angela

I know this is going to sound funny. I just want to know if you have had your blood suger checked? When my blood suger drops there is a burning pain in the middle it feels as if my whole rib cage is in a vice grip. I get shakey and weak break out in a sweat. It can happen two to three times in a day. It can be once or twice a month. It started this morning and I gagged down a protien shake after that it didn't get to far with the pain. But that is me I'am 3 years and 3 months out.might want to have it checked out. Good luck
