Hailey, yes there is such a thing. Too much protein makes the kidneys have to work extra hard to flush it out. It can also lead to calcium/bone loss and dehydration, which we are all a risk for post-op. So it is important to stick what the doctor recommends for your intake. My dietician instructed me to take in 70-80 grams per day. Shelly

excess protein is stored as fat. Balance is a beautiful thing

I was told by my nutritionist that excess protein is flushed out. You should not consume more than 35g at any one time because the body can not absorb more than that and the balance (If you consumed more) will just be flushed out. The more you exercise the more protein your body needs. SO, if you go to the gym on a regular basis , then your body "may" be able to absorb 40 or 50g at onetime, or more if yours workout are more intense. This is what I was told, I do not have any research to prove this point. I was told by my trainer, who is extremely well built and has like 4% body fat and a body I would give my left arm for, that he consumes 300-400g of protein per day.

Too much? As in.......? How many g? What form? The kidneys have to work to break the protein out of meats and such, and the "steak heads" of the old body building days did have issues with kidneys. Protein supplements were developed to help with that by partially pre-digesting the protein so that there is less load on the body to actually GET the protein. Since our digestion AND absorption are impaired, that's why so many of these products are perfect for us, as well. So, in answer to your question, it's possible to get too much at one time, but pretty hard to get too much IN SUPPLEMENT over all. Excess protein could be stored as fat, but first you'd have to reach excess.

Hailey, Protein is very important in your life after weight loss surgery, and please understand that getting proper balance of nutrition is as well just as imoportant. Also know that your body can not absorb over a certain percentage every hour, depending where you are in your journey. It is very easy to understand that this whole concept of the tool we have been lucky enough to have is not brain surgery. we all must face realilty and understand the importance of staying teachable and learning to live a new lifestyle. I am glad you are in serch of your answers... Respectfully, I have had to learn values of a new heathy lifestyle. It is very easy to do and very easy not to! From 327 to 140 to 198 to 125 now a figure competitor... I know just how to get my nutrition in and how much protein my body needs to be lean. Check out my photos....UNREAL! Yes it is me! Huge hugs go with you and your heart goes with me! Celeste Momin ~ Ormond Beach Florida
