I used to have Great West and had checked with them about covering the
surgery. This was about 2 years ago. At that time, they told me that I
had to have a letter from the doctor that would perform the surgery stating
the medical necessity for having it, and they would review it to see if
they would cover it. I didn't persue it at that time, so I don't know
anything further. You should call and speak to a rep at Great West and ask
them specifically what are their requirements.
I haven't had the surgery, but am currently persuing the possibility. I
currently have United Healthcare, and I asked them about it, and was told
that there were no circumstances in which they would cover it. I don't
know if it's just because of the particular plan that I have with them, or
if they do not cover it at all. I am getting quotes from other insurance
cos. that I know will cover it so I can have the surgery.
Has anyone else done this... get supplemental insurance just to have the
surgery? If so, who did you go with? Did you drop your other ins, or have
both? How long did you stay with the ins. co that covered the surgery
post-op?
