I have a friend who had the surgery for acid reflux. You would need to
find a very good surgeon who would be willing to work with you. I do not
believe it will automatically disqualify you from having the surgery. Make
sure you do your research on the surgeon!
Good luck

Darlene,
you are asking questions that we are not medically able to answer. this is
why you have a PCP and or a surgeon. I suggest you ask them this question

When I had my VBG in 1997 I also had the Nissan fundiplication surgery for
acid reflux. When I had to be revised to an RNY in 2000 the surgeon told
me that surgery is possible but it makes it more of a challenge due to scar
tissue issues and having to take it down. So..... yes it is possible BUT
you want a surgeon who has done them before. You wouldn't want to be
anybody's guinea pig! I would make this one of the list of questions you
would ask in speaking with a surgeon. Good luck!

Hi Darelene. I am not a doctor but I am able to answer this question from
my own experience. It is possible to have rny after have the nisson
fundoplication (gerd surgery) as I am one of those people. I had the gerd
surgery back in 96 and then had my rny in 2004. My surgeon for the rny was
aware of my history and was prepared for the possible complications. He
even asked and had the head of surgery of the hospital in the or with him
just in case there was any problems, but thankfully there was nothing. In
fact, my 'wrap' (aka fundoplication surgery) basically came undone and
there was no complications what so ever. Just make sure your doctor has all
the info on the previous surgery and do what ever he suggests for tests, etc
so both he and you are prepared for your upcoming surgery. Good luck. Any
questions please ask. Take care.

I had the Nissen in 1999 and Open RNY 6/21/01, my surgeon did the surgery
open because she needed to "take down" the Nissen. She'd done it
before so she was familiar with it but defintely get a surgeon who knows
how to do it, you don't want someone who hasn't done it before. I had no
complications and no reoccurence of the GERD. Good luck, keep looking!

I had the GERD surgery in 1995. I had my open RNY in March of 2003. I was
one of those people who had suffered some very bad complications. 2 years
later and I am doing much better.
