Question:
Considering pregnancy
I am 6 months post op and have lost 80% of my excess weight already. My bmi is down to 27.9. I am wanting to get pregnant again within the next few months. I know that it is before the 12 month mark, but all of my bloodwork comes back ok. I am going to see my ob/gyn on Tuesday. Are there any specific questions I should be asking him? Has anyone had any major complications? I am also able to eat quite well and haven't been "sick" since the first of the year. Any comments would be greatly appreciated. — j_m_easter (posted on May 12, 2006)

You should ask the doctor what your calorie intake is going to have to be
daily for a safe pregnancy. You have to know whether or not you can meet
the caloric intake prior to getting pregnant. Also ask about how much you
will need for vitamins as your body will need more than your normally do
now. Good luck and best wishes. Shelly

I know you are going to do what you want to do, but I would never consider
pregnancy this soon. My surgeon recommends that you wait 2 years to get
pregnant ... Why risk an unnecessary complication? Better to get your
health totally in order before adding a HUGE strain on your body

Hi, I agree with Annette, from everything I've learned and read it is
highly recommended that you wait at least 18 months before getting
pregnant. You should seriously go over this topic with your surgeon. I wish
you all the best. Jean

I agree with Annette, follow the doctors orders. I was at an information
meeting the other night for WLS and the surgeon recommends waiting 18
months. There was a patient there who is a little over 12 months and she
is considering getting pregnant, but haven't decided yet.
You are only 6 months out and you have no idea how well the lining of your
stomach has healed. Why tempt fate and get pregnant early? Being able to
eat quie well doesn't constitute that it's time to get pregnant. You want
to be healthy and you want your child to be healthy. When I had dental
work done and those were just fillings and one had to be redone, they made
me wait another month before taking the composite out and replacing the
almalgam because my mouth had already been through surgery. So you know if
they make you wait a month for that, they have a reason. Just like the
surgeon has a reason for you to wait 12 to 18 months prior to getting
pregnant. Your stomach is going to stretch and that little person has to
be comfortable too. Even if no one on this list has had any major problems
during a pregnancy --remember every one is different.

My surgeon recommends 2 years before getting pregnant but you will do what
you are going to do. I would wait at least 6 more months.

Many Many women have goten pregnant before the "2 year" mark and
have had perfectly normal beautiful babies without complications. The Dr's
say to wait but in all honsety they have NO IDEA what having ababy earlier
does to you or your baody there have been NO studies, it is all a guessing
game. And as i said there are hundreds of women that have had a baby
earlier I say it is up to you and your Dr. whatever you decide i wish you
all the BEst

From what I hear the issues is that it is less than ideal to become
pregnant while you are still losing weight. What is the rush....why not
enjoy your weight loss and new body for a few minutes first. Best wishes
no matter what happens!

I would consider waiting a while before you get pregnant. I am 2 years and
7 months post op and pregnant. God have I been sick, My body is craving
all the things that make me sick! Also I feel like I am starving to death!
I don't know that it is ever easy after the surgery, but please consider
waiting, at least you will have more experience and know your body better.
