Question:
HAS ANYONE HAD TO HAVE A TRACH?
I weigh over 400lbs and my Dr. says I have to have a trach and I'm scared...Can anyone tell me how it was for them? How long did it take to heal? And did you have any problems with having it? — [Anonymous] (posted on March 24, 2001)

Hmmmmmm..... are you sure that you heard your doctor right? Tracheostomies
are usually only done on patients who will require LONG TERM ventilation.
I would venture to guess that, unless you have a physical deviation that
prevents normal intubation, you will not be getting a trach for WLS. Just
my educated opinion. Good Luck!

Hi I agree with the prevous answer. I weighted way over 400lbs
and I never had a trach. if your Doctor says you have to, there
must be a reason. This is the first I have ever heard of a trach.
for wls, get a second opinion. GOOD LUCK

I am confused...is your doctor saying you need a trach INSTEAD of surgery,
or during your surgery? I was diagnosed with severe sleep apnea and had two
doctors insist i have a trach installed. For me it was a terrible decision.
If you would like to talk about the care, healing or any aspect of having a
trach, email me privatly.
