Question:
Does everyone have trouble with gas after surgery?
I am pre-op. I am hearing so much about horrible, smelly gas. To the point it is effecting peoples lives/jobs. Does everyone have this problem? — chemo_mom (posted on May 18, 2010)

Not really to that extent. I definitely have issues with gas, but it isn't
horrible and usually isn't smelly - popping a few gas-x strip typically
does the job. I had RNY.

I have a lot of gas, but it seems to be connected to certain foods -
especially fried (which we're not supposed to have, anyways). I always
carry a bottle of Devrom with me in case I feel a case of the
"gassies" coming on, and will chew up to 4 tablets to try and
head it off. Other's say that the Gas-X meltaways help, but I haven't
found that to be true for me. My gas has not REALLY adversely affected my
life much, it only happens at certain times, and I can generally predict
them based upon what I've eaten. A lot of people get gassy from eating
cheese and dairy products, so you might pay attention to that - I see
you're pre-op, so you can pretty much figure that anything that gives you
gas now will surely give you worse gas after surgery. Things like broccoli
or other strong smelling vegetables can be culprits, as can some types of
protein powders. I did just fine with the Syntrax Brand, and with the
Inspire brand from BariatricEating.com. Also, the IsoPure clear
ready-to-drink protein bottles didn't cause me any problems. It's just
kind of hit and miss....but it would not have stopped me from having my
surgery. Gas or not, I've been given a second chance at life, and 14
months later, down 140+ pounds, I'm truly happy and healthy for what feels
like the first time in my life!

In the first six months I wanted a little nibble of chocolate so i tried
some sugar free chocolates.............wrong choice. Gas, gas, gas. I am
thinking it is all of the sugar alcohol. That is a big smelly no no for
me!

Hi there....There are no do and don't answere's here .If we eat what and
how we are suppose to than we will indeed get gas. The dairy, grains, protein
protein protein that we MUST eat will indeed cause this.Sooooo, what you
need to concentrate on is bringing a little relief to the syptoms of
flatulence....bean-o is great as well as the gas-x strips. This small and
inexpensive remedy is so much better than being miserable and overweight
the rest of our lives. I wish you much much much success my friend. I
Renee, have farted away 106 pounds!! Good luck and God Bless!
