Question:
Has anyone else had to quit smoking before surgery? And how long before surgery?

I did not smoke but during every meeting, visit, seminar etc. my surgeon was insistent that you must not smoke. If he knows you are still smoking, he would not do the surgery. It has something to do with getting ulcers in your pouch. All surgeons are different though. Hope that helps.

My surgeon demands that every patient quit soking at least 8 weeks before surgery. I was lucky because I had quit last October.

I was told I had to be smoke free at minimum 30 days so I quit 4 months ago but have had other issues to deal with for approval. I went to a hypnotist....it was a breeze and I was a 2-3 pack a day smoker for 20 plus years. Good luck!

I had to quit 6 weeks before surgury. They did a blood test a week before surgury and I still had scant amounts of nicotine in my blood, but they went ahead and did my surgery. I was so scared that I would be turned down. So if you are asked to quit. Don't cheat! It could delay your date!

My Dr suggested that it would be a good idea. He never insisted. Concerns about the surgery and my age, and my smoking, prompted me to say ok enough is enough. I put them down 4 months ago and haven't looked back. It tough to do though, good luck.

At our seminar our Dr. said anyone who smokes,he would not due surgery,so quit now if you want this surgery,it,s all about getting healthy, and they check nicotine in blood test,so it,s not worth being dishonest our Dr. informed us. I quit over three years ago, while researching, gastric bypass, and I smoked for 32years and it was not easy, but I didn,t want nothing to stop me from getting this surgery!Hope this helps!!!

I do not smoke, but I know my Lap Band doctor will not operate on someone who smokes. He tells you to quit right away at the first consultation appointment.

Mind over matter if you don't mind NOT having the surgery then it don't matter if you quit. BUT if you mind than quit it is for the very best in the long run. It's hard no lie but there is so much help now days not to try...GOOD LUCK!!!
