Question:
I am 2 years out from RNY, is it safe to have colonoscopy?
I know you have to drink that pre-op stuff to clean you out, but they are also telling me to have all sugar y foods the day before. What am i looking at other than being on the toilet all day. — Darlene G. (posted on May 8, 2009)

You're safe to have the procedure. Don't do the sugary things (never heard
of that before), but the pre-op stuff is not too bad to choke down. Ummmm,
don't guzzle it either, though - learn from me. I did and it wasn't
pretty. Not too bad if you hold your nose while drinking it. The sleepy
stuff they give you is pretty good. You won't remember a thing, other than
a really great nap!!!

That is....unless Fentenil and Versed don't do anything for you....I gave a
running commentary on the video of the whole procedure... and remember it
all -- LOL. PS - I never heard of eating "sugary stuff" the day
before, either!! As a matter of fact, I was on clear liquids for 24 hours
before the procedure, and nothing by mouth after midnight the day of the
procedure.

The usual pre-procedure diet is clear liquids but nothing that is red. SF
jello-anything but red colored,SF popsicles, broths, tea, juices-if full
sugar-dilute by half with water.

Thanks everyone for the input. I know the pre- precedure and i know it's
clear liquids, nothing red, but the paperwork i got states koolaide or
gatorade, or even ice pops should have sugar so i'll have the calories. But
i know what sugar does to me, and i'm going to stick with the no sugar...
i'll be on the toilet enough with the prep, never mind adding sugar...lol

I had my first ever colonoscopy 3 months after RNY with no problems. They
gave me less to drink than my husband because of the RNY. (It was a
different kind of drink.) I've also heard since then that some dr's will
let you take pills to get cleaned out instead of drinking that horrid
stuff. I plan to find a dr. next time that'll give the pills instead of
the liquid to drink.
