Question:
When you chew meat throughly - does it loose flavor?

By the time I'm done chewing - it tastes like cardboard & I'm ready to spit it out.    — hiwypi (posted on March 28, 2009)

I used to feel the same way, but as time goes by, it does get a lot better. I used to love chicken & beef - cooked any way. After surgery, it tasted nasty after I chewed it to death. Now, I still chew it to death, but it doesn't bother me anymore. Either I got used to it, couldn't stand the consequences if I don't chew it well or the pouch has healed so much that it is just not as sensitive as it was in the beginning. Regardless, eating for me is back to normal only this time I do chew my food. Prior to surgery, I think I just ate it whole.

That did happen to me as well...It used to taste like metal to me and couldn't eat any red meat except ground hamburger. I rarely ate any dry meat at all the first years. Most of my meats were stewed or soup meats (boiled) to keep them tender and moist...If the meat was too dry whether it was chicken or beef...it would hit my pouch like a rock and ache...After some years this all changes and you can eat more normally still chewing but without much thought. It becomes second nature and your tastes adjust...I ate meats with plain greek yogurt flavored with garlic or horseradish and dill to help it slide and give it taste as well. You can try something like that or make gravy to add a little moisture and flavor (watch the sodium) I swell if I eat anything with a lot of salt. You might just need to toss the meat in the food processor and give it just a little quickie "whiz" so it's half chewed already, but still enough texture to chew it yourself as well and use anything to give it a little moisture and flavor until you can enjoy it more normally.

I haven't had that experience. I guess it may have something to do with the type of meat you are eating. The tighter my Band is, the higher quality of meat I have to eat as it is more tender and easier to digest. I have switched to filet mignon for the most part. I don't mean to sound like an elitist, it is just that if I can only have a few bites of something, I want the best tasting, highest quality bites I can find. One small filet can last a couple of meals and there is no fat so there is no waste- so not that expensive after all. A little touch of A1 or SF BBQ sauce once in a while wouldn't hurt you and would probably help the taste and with moisture making it easier to get down. Just be sure to read the label and get SF or low sugar so you don't dump. Doesn't take much really if you get in the habit of dipping your fork into sauce and then the food you want to eat. Keep getting in that protein and best of luck. Dawn Vickers
