Question:
Will I ever be able to eat "normal" again. Like Pizza or a hotdog?

I will be one year out on the 31st of this month, I can eat one slice of pizza but more like the topping and not the crust and I can eat 1 hot dog without the bun. But I choose to eat these foods not as often as I do my healthier choices. But I do have kids and sometimes I enjoy eating out with them and this summer it has been easy to order out a pizza or grill out a hot dog so in moderation. God bless and continued success.

The honest truth is that these types of foods made us fat. My kids are grown and now struggle with their weight and I wish, I had never made those kind of food choices okay, when they were little. There are alot of healthier food choices that are still fun. Like Taco salads, and don't eat the chips. You don't want to start working those foods back, and training your body to eat them again. I have read that the malabsorbtion effect can lessen in time, and cannot be relyed upon to keep the weight off. Eating less, and the right choices will keep the weight off. You still have about 6 more months you could lose weight if you haven't reached your goal. I am 10 months out, and have a wonderful angel that keeps me straight when I have asked these kind of questions. I am just passing on what I have learned thus far. Good luck to you in continuing to be the healthiest you can.

Yes you can. Yu won't be able to eat a whole hot dog or a whole piece of pizza at first but it will come. Just because you've had the surgery doesn't mean you have to each cottage cheese for the rest of your life. Don't let some of these people make you feel bad for wanting good tasting food. It's totally normal. You are not a bad person and you will not get fat unless you intend to eat 3 of them in one sitting. Give yourself a break.....3 bites of a pizza will not make you fat and it will satisfy that urge to eat something tasty!

Yes, you will! But stuff like bread, pasta, rice and potatoes will probably not ever go down easy! That's a good thing! I'm just about at 5 years and have pizza every once in a blue moon...I can only handle one hot dog and it usually makes me nauseous...These sort of foods are not something you "should" really eat often anymore...Everytime hubby and I are out , he tries to get me to a pizza place or junky food joints! Poor thing is deprived of junk food...(He knows he is healthier though and loves that!) But I FINALLY let him order a pizza the other day... I like thin crust because it is a whole lot less bread! I have seen some places offering a whole wheat crust now! I'm only a carb phobic 5 outta 7 days a week! I like to kick up my calories and boost my metabolism one day a week..sometimes two (usually weekends)...I normally eat equal grams of protein and carbs...Usually complex carbs, but occasionally I go for the old favs! Bread, rice, pasta, or potatoes! They don't like me very much these days...but a little is a nice treat now and then...I wouldn't make it a habit though! Stick close to the rules most often...They work! As soon as you fall away from the rules for more than a few days...you're probably heading for trouble! So limit these things for your own good...I personally do not deprive myself of anything I want. I just want to be stay thin forever...and so I do set limits for myself and only allow one or two steps off the right track and hop right back on! I work out the next day if I was really bad! I'm not into beating myself up for being human...but I will work myself out if I overdo it! BTW, an extra large slice of pizza with heavy cheese is about 800 calories, 38 g fat, 70 carbs, 44 protein! Those are SOME HUGE numbers! HUGE! A large hot dog has about 560 calories, 32 fat, 46 carbs and 20 protein! (not much better than the pizza! These things are much of my daily grand totals! No wonder hot dogs make me nauseous! That is a LOT of animal fat for one meal! LIMIT these things.... for real!!!!

First thing you have to do is change the way you think about eating...If you have had surgery. the way you used to eat was not "normal", everything about it was flawed..Once you come to terms with that, things will get easier... You will probably be able to eat a slice of pizza, minus the very end crust, maybe even a hotdog, my husband does...but these items are low on the nutrient chain and should not be eaten often..You had not mentioned how far out you are and these are normal feelings in the beginning...I am 3 1/2 months out and am starting to come to terms that my old life is over and the way I viewed the world and all of its events have changed..I viewed everything from a food standpoint and find that if I am not eating I don't know what to do with myself...It is tough but that is one big fat addiction we are all fighting and one we cannot just walk away from the drup, we must eat to survive and must deal with it everyday.. Good luck on your journey...

Okay, since everyone else (so far) has been talking all "rainbows", I'm going to say it straight! WHY??? Do you not realize that these are the same types of foods that made you gain weight in the first place??? Why would you even think about putting this crap in your mouth again?? You have had this surgery to lose weight (I assume) and you are talking about eating hot dogs and pizza! Why not go the next step and eat some cheesecake and some pop and chips?? Does that sound silly? Well, so is pizza and hot dogs! Why would you endager your health AND your weight loss by going back to these lousy eating habits?? Get a grip on yourself and give yourself a shake! Think about the other types of food that you CAN eat! There are tons of healthy things that you can eat that won't make you gain your weight back! Please, please, re-think this type of decision! Don't sabotage yourself!

YES! Just not as much as you used to eat. One slice of pizza satisfies me now whereas -- before bariatric surgery -- I could, and often would, eat the whole pizza (and want MORE!). Don't start this sort of thing though until after the honeymoon period is over (about 6 months or so post surgery). Avoidance of the dumping syndrome will help you to shy away from going after "that second slice". [I'm assuming you've had RNY. Those who have had lap-band may have a totally different story to tell.]

I'm going to risk being blasted by others and say this to you: Yes, you can. I'm six weeks out, and I had half a slice of pizza last week for lunch. It had sausage on it so I could at least get some protein in, but I did eat it. I eat a hotdog almost every day for lunch. Of course, it is a turkey hot dog without the roll, but it tastes just as good. They say everyone is different, and I'd have to agree. Lots said they can't have rice or pasta, or pizza, etc. I've had rice (granted, only two fork fulls, but I had it), pasta, pizza....for me, I like to try the stuff to see if I can tolerate it. I'll probably hear about saying I eat this stuff, but my problem before was that I'd sit down and eat three or four slices of pizza, or half a box of pasta in one meal. I'm getting my protein and my water in, and I've been exercising at least 5 times a week. My weight is coming off, and I do feel normal - I can sit down and eat what the rest of my family is eating at dinner, just a small amount.

Thank you everyone for your response to my question. I know it was odd, and I should be thinking about those kind of foods. Don't get me wrong they are not on my mind all the time but I am only in the very begininng of my journey and am still feeling a bit out of place with food right now. Thank you again for answers. This site has been a great tool.

I thought that I was doing something wrong by being able to eat whatever I want. My portions are extremely smaller, but I have been able to eat almost anything. There are healthier versons of Rice, pasta, and tortillas. My band was done 9-18-2008 and I have not vomited on anything. I have to choose not to eat bigger portions... but if I wanted to I probably could. I still have not had my first fill... so maybe this will change when that is completed.
