Question:
3 weeks post op, having a problem getting my protien!

I had open rny on the 17th. I had some respitory complications and was in the hospital for 8 days. I am home and really having a problem getting my protien in. I have not had any issues tolerating food that I have tried, cottage cheese, string cheese, pudding, mashed potatos and the liquid diet things. Are there any other food ideas with protien I should try at this point? I have protien shakes but I have a hard time getting them down, I start to gag. Any tasteless protien powder??? Thanks so much for any ideas!    — Blonde_Sanchez (posted on October 6, 2007)

Yep, tasteless protein powder! I get mine at GNC (cheaper than online and no shipping and handling charges). It's called Anywhey tasteless protein powder. It's not 100% tasteless (this is not possible I'd say it's about 90% tasteless) but you can add it to hot or cold drinks (I add it to crystalight and lipton tea's) and even bake with it, or add it to soups. Sorry you had such a tough time with your surgery, but you are on the right track! Good luck, God bless and welcome to the losing side!

I am waiting for a surg. date. Practicing ahead getting in enough protein myself. I found that lite yogurt is good. Also you might try strained baby food meat. Check out the store on OH.com. They have some little vials of super protein. I plan on using them after my surgery, until I am able to use pureed food. Good luck.

I would grab a tablespoon of peanut butter and savor every lick. GREAT protein in it.

I love the protein bullets. Also blend some Nectar cherry protein powder with vanilla yogurt and some ice and 4 oz FF milk, yum. I also like blending pina colada protein powder, half a banana, and lite peach yogurt with a few ice cubes and 4 oz FF milk. I use the unjury tasteless protein powder in soups. Pre op I tried it in everything and the only thing I didn't like it in was oatmeal...but some people love it. It's really good in cottage cheese, and so is the pina colada flavored protein power if you like fruit with your cottage cheese. I also buy most of my protein from barriatriceating.com. Their sample pack was very helpful pre-op in deciding what I might like post op.

Hi. Congratulations on taking this first step in saving your life. I hope you soon lose the obsession with what can you eat and start keeping a journal of things that work for you, nutrition wise. This far out your concern should probably be more to stay hydrated, eating clear foods like broth and jello-- and then sugar free puddings, etc. Milk--low fat (2 %) is always a good protein source, and watery refried beans are another food you might be able to add. I found Unjury brand protien supplements to be the best tolerated when I was at your stage in the process. You can find them at www.Unjury.com. I'm now two years out, and thank G-d, I have been at the same weight for about a year, more than 100 pounds lighter than I was 2 years ago. Good luck with yuor weight loss journey, and remember that your surgeon or his office staff usually have the answers you need.

Laura, We have found that our patients do very well with the relatively tasteless products called beneprotein as well as casec protein powder. Can add them to virtually anything to augment the protein content. Tom Inge, MD Surgical Weight Loss Program for Teens Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center Cincinnati, OH

I've been out shopping pre-surgery and found Kellogg's K2O - it's a powder that you put in your water and each little packet has 5gr of protein. I figure that if I"m drinking water anyways, may as well get some extra in! To me it tastes like crystal light pink lemonade. Good luck!!

Just an update-- for the Anywhey tasteless protein powder, you get a full 17 grams of protein. I just went and bought another small canister (1.35 lbs) for $26.99 plus tax) @ GNC

Just an update-- for the Anywhey tasteless protein powder, you get a full 17 grams of protein. I just went and bought another small canister (1.35 lbs) for $26.99 plus tax) @ GNC. (They went up in price because of the increase in milk prices was what I was told). Note, in one scoop you get 17 grams of protein, and only 70 calories with very little taste, and a reasonable price. I researched the beneprotein, and the casec protein powder (I am always looking for a bargain and a way to get more protein in with very little cost as I am on a very strict budget) and found that the beneprotein powder is very expensive, and only gives you 6 grams of protein with 25 calories in one scoop. So, if you look at it this way, in order to get in the same amount of protein grams as the Anywhey tasteless you would have to have 3 scoops and you would get the same amount of calories. The Casec protein powder gives you 90 grams of protein, BUT 380 calories. If you take 5 scoops of the Anywhey tasteless powder (to get 85 grams of protein), you only get 350 calories. BUT again, the casec is expensive, and hard to find. Looks like you would have to order online and the regular high cost PLUS shipping and handling. I am to the point where I don't use very much of the protein powder anymore because I am able to get the majority of my protein from foods (I love chicken breasts, small eye of round steaks the ones that look like filet mignon`, and turkey all VERY high in protein with the perfect portions for me at a little over 6 months out). Basically if you can afford it, try the casec, or the beneprotein powder. If you're like me and can't afford very much, try the Anywhey tasteless from GNC. Good luck!

Hi Laura, At GNC they have a protien that is a clear, more like Kool-aide. It is called Isopure, pre-mixed. It is a little pricey, but it has 40 grams of protien in 20 oz. and you can water it down a bit. It goes down much easier then the milky thick protein drinks. Another one is from www.SmartForm.com and it is a powder. It is not quite as sweet tasting as isopure and goes down really easy. If you put in the code INTRO10DISC there is a 10% off of your first order. These are the protein drinks that we now start our new patients on as it is easier to get down. It will get better, believe me. I am almost 4 years out. Good Luck - Judy Harris

Having been postop for almost two years I have come to many conclussions. The biggest one is that protein drinks just don't taste all that great, and I have tried MANY. At this point you are looking to what you think is the least offensive...."Well that didn't make me gag" not "YUMMMY please give me another!!!" It will get better as time goes by and you are physically able to drink more at a time instead of a long drawn out process of YUCK. That all being said muscle milk premixed drinks are among the better tasting ones I have had (stay clear of their pudding though, its not natural to be able to use puddding as mortar lol). This drink has 22 gm of protein per drink. Stallone's Pudding (made by Cytotech I think) can be found online and at GNC. It has 20gm of protein in a can about the size of a small baked bean can. I add a touch of lite Coolwhip to give it a little better taste. Goodluck!

Hi Laura! I'm 4 1/2 months out and the days that I don't get enough protein in with my meals I drink the Whey liquid protein. If you want a quick way to get your protein in try these. There are 42 grams of protein in 3 oz. It tastes like a very sweet liquid jello. I find it easy to drink because is such a small amount for all that protein. You can buy them on line or at Vitamin World. They come in Fruit punch, orange, and grape flavor for the 42 grams. They also have the 25 grams in 3 oz, but for 50 cents more you get 42 grams! Hope this helps and good luck!!

From what I am seeing everyone is giving good advice accept they seem to be riding you. I am 13 months post-op open RNY also and had a hard time getting protein and water in. I could either get all of one or all of the other but had a terriable time getting both in. It will get better, it is a learning thing. You can use the other suggestions as far as flavorless protein but you have only been home 2 weeks. You will learn your balance. Hang in there and congrats!!!

try Protidiet supplements - orange isn't very good but the other flavors are great. You can order online, just search for Protidiet. I have at least 4 every day - you mix with 5 ozs water and they taste much like kool aid.
