Question:
Very grafic about stools

I had ps in May this year. I noticed after the ps a large bulge in my abdoman. Test results showed an incisional incarcerated hernia and in addition during surgery the general surgeon found it extendted into the groin area and fixed it. Before it was fixed while it was semi incarcerated, which I didn't know I started haveing trouble with leaky bowels. Just being fecal incontenint and didn't even feel it. I also started having colon spasms. Long story short went to gastro they sent me to surgeon, etc. They said the fecal incontenince could have been caused by the bowels going in and out of the hernia. After the hernia operation, I am still having leaky bowels....true I am very swollen from the operation which is normal and putting pressure on the bowels. ANYONE else going through or has had leaky bowel problem??? I'm really depressed and feeling really blue about this whole thing...maybe having to wear a pullup. I know that I just went through a 7 1/2 hour Plastic surgery in May and now this surgery with the hernia and I'm feeling really exhaused and blue....no hope...let me hear from you guys and gals and any expereinces you've had..I feel like the only one in the world who doesn't know when poopy is going to come out....SAD FACE sorry for the pitty party.. thanks    — Karen Renee (posted on October 3, 2006)

I had this problem for quite awhile - it made me question whether or not my surgery was worth it. I visited my surgeon, my Primary Care physician and a general surgeon. Each had a different idea to try - one laxatives every day, another metameucil wafers the third fiber capsules - none of them worked. I did some reading on a fecal incontinence organization site and experimented some - and I found that 3 immodium in the morning and 2 at lunch and the same number of Gas-X has made it a very very minor part of my life - not most of my life. I understand how miserable you must be. Take a look at the sight, try a few different things and let me know how it works for you.

you need to work closely w/ your dr on this. Are you having constipation, maybe alternating w/ diahrea? Do you have irritable bowel syndrome? Definately see the DR and dont give up until yo have an answer and a treatment that works.

I had this problem due to other reasons. It is not at all a nice thing. I felt unable to leave the house. I felt like I got a bum deal cuz stuff like this is not suposed to happen to 25 year olds. Mine got better after 3 weeks. Still abnormal at that point but atleast no more "surprises." All I can say is hang in there, my guess is that you will get better slowly, especially as your swelling goes down. I used metamucil powders several times a day in the hopes that it would absorb some of the liquid up bedore gettign to my bowel. I'm not sure that it helped but it definitely didn't hurt. If you try this, make sure you slowly increase the metamucil slowly as it can cause bloating and gas if you take too much too fast. Have they done any testing for you? There are a lot of tests that can be used to figure out what is causing your problem. If you give it some time (or you already have) it might be worthwhile to ask for a referral to a gastrointestinal doctor (GI). Good luck to you. Feel free to contact me privately.
