Question:
Anyone experiencing intense abdominal pain under breast that radiates into the back?
I am 4 years post-op. For the last 3 months, I have been experiencing pain in my upper abdomen on the left side that radiates around my side and into my upper back. The pain is so severe that it wakes me nightly. I am taken napoxen sodium and muscle relaxant to relieve the pain. Just recently, my doctor prescribed Zelnorm for irritable bowel. It worked for a while but now the pain is back. Has anyone had any of these symptoms? — Patsy Ross (posted on February 28, 2006)

Gallbladder. I am having the surgery on March 23rd, however, 10 years ago,
I had the same symptoms, They treated me for an ulcer for six months, then
a friend told me that it sounded like my gallbladder. I would wake up in
the middle of the night with intense pain in my back, I would get in the
shower and put the hottest water I could stand on my back, however, as soon
as I got out of the shower, the pain was there. Eventually, I started to
wake up and vomit. I went to the hospital, they did an ultrasound, and
walla, it was my gallbladder.
It is very common for people to have to have their gallbladders removed
after loosing a lot of weight fast. Take it easy. Get an ultrasound:)

I don't have an answer to your question, sorry. Just wanted to say that I
was told not to take NSAIDS ever again and Naproxen is an NSAID. I would
look into that before taking it anymore.

Sorry to hear about the pain, it sounds to me like a gallbladder attack, I
had my gallbladder removed in 2003 after several horrible attacks. They are
just as you describe them and always happened in the middle of the night.
Certain things irritate it like fatty food, and vegetables that are harder
to digest like broccoli and corn. You have to get you blood tested for a
liver enzyme called ALT during or after an attack, an ultrasound will also
show stones and/or blockages.

You should get checked as soon as possible. I could also be Pancreatitis.
I am aslo just starting to get these pains at 6 months out...so I am seeing
my doctor in the morning. Good Luck and I hope you feel better soon.

I am only 2 yrs out, but have you check with you actual surgeon that did
your surgery. If you still have a gall bladder, that is most likely what it
is. If not, it could be an ulcer forming, but as someone else said you
shoudl not be takig the
NSAIDS they are bad for wls folks. Is it usually after you eat something,
if so it could also be a hernia starting in a place that the food iritates.
Hope you find answers soon, no fun I am sure. Marilyn, the Bearlady

It is possible that it is your galbladder, but what you describe is exactly
the way my ulcer feels. If it's the latter, alieve will aggrivate it.

I had my galbladder out months ago I thought that is what the pain was but
I still get the pain from time to time. It turns out it is gas pure plain
smelly stinky gas. somehow it is like it gets locked in there. I have never
experienced gas in such a place it has always been lower abdoman but these
days it is right under the breast and goes all the way arround my back just
like a vice is squeezing me and almost takes my breath . i have found that
jumping arround or taking some gas reliever has worked after a few minutes.
Hope this helps.

Like most everyone else, I'd say it sounds like your gallbladder, but if
they do a scan and say you have no stones, insist on a HIDA scan, which can
determine if the organ is even functioning properly. I didn't have any
stones, but I did have biliary dyskensia and had the gallbladder out the
year after my bypass in 2004. Haven't had an attack since. Good luck.

I would go to an internist(spelling) - not sure if it is your gallbladder
as everyone else seems to think - the only reason I say that is gallbladder
is on your right side - appendix is on your left side - could be a few
different things, but generally if it is your gallbladder if you gently-but
firmly push on your left side under breast -by ribs - you'll know it's your
gallbladder. May also be a ulcer. But if it's right side I don't think it's
gallbladder. Jen

Hi, I have had ongoing pain like this on the left side. My gallbladder
has been gone long before RNY. I have ulcers, hypertensive esophagus,
esophagual spasms, Crohns and some other stuff. The one drug that helps me
the most is an
anti-spasmodic called Bentyl. I hope you find relief soon. Nut

I thought my stomach would explode from the pain I felt--it radiated to my
back also. I went to the doctor and to make a long story short, I had a
gallstone that would get stuck in the tube, that caused the pain. I
thought it was trapped gas, but I was wrong--I had to have my gallbladder
taken out.
