Question:
Why am I craving sweets and what can I do to stop it?

I am about 5 months post op and lately I have been craving sweets like a mad woman I don't understand it I was never a sweet eater before surgery. Is there any supplement or something that can help? Any advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks Pam    — sunnie (posted on February 16, 2006)

hi pam- pre op i was the sweets queen, ice cream, chocolate, pies, cakes, cookies, you name it, if it was sweet, I loved it. Post op almost 2 years, and I havent craved those foods, but I think I know why. I have 12 oz Isopure dutch chocolate protein shake every morning for my breakfast- and if I think I need something sweet, I mix smuckers sugar free jelly/jam into my fat free cottage cheese, and for some reason, it does the trick, and its all legal. Give them a try. Good protein too. Hope you get rid of the sweet tooth, it can mess things up- that and empty carbs. Cindi -219#

What are your labs showing? According to this, it could be B-vitamin deficiency. Are you taking your B Vitamins every day? B-vitamin deficiencies result in less of the stored glycogen in the liver being converted to glucose (blood sugar). This lowered blood sugar in the brain results in craving for sweets and a corresponding increased intake of refined sugar. It's a vicious circle - sugar produces magnesium deficiencies and magnesium deficiencies produce craving for more sugar!

I find that when I am like that I have just a little bit of sweets and it takes care of the craving. I try not to deny myself anything because I find that the when I keep denying myself I crave them more. So, usually if I have say something like a yogurt it helps with that craving and I am fine for a while. I do not think that it is a vitamin that you are missing, I think that it is really more of a head hunger thing.

Mostly protein supplement (with water, nothing added) will help turn my wanter down. I also use Relora for sweet cravings. I was not a sweet eater pre-op. Started about 2 yrs out. But I am 11.5 yrs now, and the only thing I've found that helps is to drink protein drinks, back to back if I must, to keep me from going to get the eveil whatever I think I need.

I am scheduled for surgery in exactly 1 week from today and I am on that pre-op diet and I have been craving sweets like cray so I eat those Southbeach Diet High protein cereal bars. Maybe you should try those. I especialy love the peanut butter bars. But, they come in all different flavors. The peanut butter kind has 140 calories and 10g of protein in 1 bar. I have also been drinking these shakes called "Muscle Milk" I found out about on this web site. Chocholate is VERY GOOD! with 34g of protein in them.~Melissa

Pam... I too have a horrible sweet tooth since the surgery, sweets were something i rarely ever ate. When I finally had a conversation with my surgeon, he told e it was because I wasn't getting enough carbs. Even though we need to cut the carbs drasticly, there is such a thing as too much cutting... I have since added more carbs to my diet, and the sweet tooth has tapered off considerably. Hope this helps. Good luck.

Pam: I am so sympathetic to your cause. I have a sweet tooth so much larger than what it used to be pre op. I am almost 2 years post op, lost 120 pounds, and doing great. Not gaining, but I am concerned about the sweet thing. I am gonna have my annual appt soon, so I will ask about the B vitamin thing, how my levels are doing and see what they say. I appreciate some of these answers, they may help me too. Hang in there. There have to be answers, just be patient and don't lose heart. Keep your exercise up to help balance your weight, and just be patient. Thanks for asking your question. Patty

Hi, My grocery store has a whole bakery area for diabetics and people with special dietary needs. I bought a choc cake with icing that had no sugar added. Protein was on 5 grams, but the sugar content is only 0.5 grams for a slice. I don't over do it, I eat a slice maybe once or twice a week. Check to see if your local grocery store has the same thing.
