Question:
AT ONE MONTH POST OP FROM OPEN RNY I DEVELOPED A TERRIBLE
BURNING PAIN ALL ALONG MY LEFT SHOULDER BLADE. I HAVE PUT ICE AND HEAT ON IT FOR ONE MONTH NOW. HAS ANY OF YOU HAD A SIMULAR EXPERIENCE AND DO YOU THINK I SHOULD SEE THE DOCTOR FOR THIS? DO YOU THINK IT IS DUE TO WLS OR SOME ORTHOPEDIC ISSUE? — ALEOINIDAHO (posted on December 6, 2003)

Alison ... when you are in pain for more than a short period of time you
really should see your doctor. Call your surgeon's office, explain the
problem and asked if you need to come in to see them OR if you should see
your primary doctor. I hope you feel better soon. Mary

I had this same pain after my RNY. It only lasted a few days though.
However, after a surgery to remove an ulcer a year later I developed the
same pain again. It lasted for several months and still comes back from
time to time. I've explained it to several docs but they have always blown
it off. I had other issues during those times so I didnt push the issue as
it was not as important as the other pains I was having at the time. A
suggestion one of the doctors said was that it may have been caused from
some kind of nerve damage during the surgery. I've also asked about it
here and was told it may be deferred pain from other areas of my abdomen.
Please get it checked out...any pain is worth a doctor visit. Becky RNY

I hope I'm not wrong here, but I believe I've read several times in the
library here about a burning like this that is due to anesthesia, and its
lingering effects. Look it up under "pain" or
"shoulder" and I bet you will find info on this. Hope this
helps!!! Becky Mulligan
