I'm 57, having open RNY with gall bladder removal. Barring any complications, should my hospital stay be any longer than someone younger than myself? Would REALLY like to hear from the over 50-55 yr. old crowd.    — DONNA S. (posted on May 25, 2003)

I had an Lap RNY on 4/22 went home 4/24. I will be 53 in August. Your stay should not be any longer than ususal if no complications. No worries.

I was 56 in Feb when I had open rny surgery on Monday and went home on Thursday. I didn't feel like going home but I thought on the other hand, I might be better off at home. I will tell you this, my recovery period at home seemed to take a little longer and now at four months out, I feel great.

Have two friends in their 50's who've had WLS and one was out sooner than me, zero complications and the other was in one day longer than me (I'm 35) - very minor complications. Depends on a lot of things: your surgeon, your general health, the facility your in, etc.

Donna, I think your stay would be about the same as anyone else's. Something to keep in mind is that at 57, you have probably experienced some pain and discomfort before and can work thhrough it, probably better than a younger person who may be experiencing a surgical procedure for the first time. Just remember to get up and walk as soon as you can, and cough and deep breathe! Best of luck!
