Question:
9 MONTHS POST OP AND STILL NOT ABLE TO EAT MUCH SOLID FOOD
I have trouble with just about any solid food and sometimes with liquids, it just seems to get stuck in my esophagus and then I have to throw up. I've tried the Mylanta and the Pepcid, does anyone have any suggestions. Real frustrated! — PAM J. (posted on May 17, 2001)

I am also nine months post op. What have you been eating thus far? I
noticed that in the beginning (3 months or so) I steered clear of solids.
When the time came to eat the solids, I was miserable; though I didnt
vomit. I also had the tightness in my esophagus. I was such a good chewer
that when it came time to take my pills again without crushing I gagged!
Are you chewing enough? Still, to this day, I groud everything. I have
arguments with my sister all the time (6 months post op) because she never
chews enough. Everything should be pureed before you swallow. If you are
chewing well, it could be that the opening to the intestines it too narrow
and needs to be widened. Best advice I could give you would be to contact
your surgeon and tell him your problem.

I am slightly over a year post op. That nausea comes and goes with me
still. It seems I do better with ground things like hamburger or veal
pattie than hard solids. I ate a steak yesterday (about 3 oz) that wasn't
ground and it stayed down just fine. I just finished dinner a crab cake and
3 shrimp again about 3-4oz.( Not a deviled crab)so I'm not sure what you
mean by you cannot eat much , did you mean not a big variety?or a lot at
one setting? I supplement with protein and take my vitamins. If I eat wet
things like soup I can usually eat about a cup or 3/4c. of chilli maybe
2or3 crackers, is this what you mean? If it is I think it's pretty normal
at least it is my normal. I hope this helps you. Kudo's on your great
weightloss!
