Question:
Nausea
I had a VSG 10 weeks ago and I still wake up nauseous. I cannot eat or drink without throwing up. I have had a dilation twice with no relief and am beginning to think there is something else wrong with me, not related to the surgery. Has anyone else had the nausea and vomiting like this? — northwoodcav (posted on September 12, 2011)

I had a different weight loss surgery, but I fought with continual nausea
for the first year after my surgery, then another 3 years of a lot of on
and off nausea. I use ginger to help when it's really bothering me. That
first year was horrible and the severe nausea threw me into a deep
depressive state which I realize now, only made the nausea worse. Two
different anti depresents actually help to stop the nausea. I almost lost
my job and spouse over it. Getting it controlled now is very important! I
would talk to the doc about some short term reglan and anti-depression
medicine to try to get yours under control. The reglan helps with motility
in the gut and stomach. Be sure and try the ginger! Ginger ale(make sure
it's made with real ginger), ginger capsules to swallow, and if you can
tolerate it, fresh ginger. Also some ginger tea!! Good luck!! Feel free
to email me if you like, I have been there!! [email protected]

I have dealt with nausea regularly since shortly after my RNY in March of
09. Initially it meant I had an ulcer, but now I've had 4 serious episodes
without any ulcer. It seems to be connected to my bowels. If I get backed
up for any reason, nausea and sometimes pain start. I don't feel full or
even bloated, but I will look back and realize it's been days. Then I
escalate my bowel regimen to clear the system.
Especially right after you may be eating less and have less need to go, but
I would suggest tracking when you have bowel movements to see if you notice
patterns. I did say 4 episodes, but I need to clarify that I get nauseous
almost weekly, the episodes occur when I get further behind without
realizing it. About every 4-6 months it seems that even with my bowel
routine it just stops up and causes additional issues.
Good luck, zofran, Miralax and colace have become my friends.

I had RNY 5 weeks ago. I have been hospitalized 3 times for nausea and
dehydration, not counting the trips to ER in between. They removed my
gallbladder to see if that was the culprit with no relief. I now have a
PICC line for hydration. Fluids orally send me into ahorrible spiral of
nausea and vomitting. Food is ok for me. The IV hydration has helped
tremendously! Would love to keep in touch to see what the final resolution
is for each of us. Best of luck to you!
