Hi there. This question is asked on a fairly regular basis so you may want
to do a search on the words stomach virus and vomiting to see what others
have said. I am 10 years post op and cannot throw up like before. For me,
getting a stomach virus or food poisoning is a serious problem. Add to the
fact that I have had a small stroke in the last couple of years and also
that I have broken blood vessels in my face from the sheer force of dry
heaving and the whole prospect of getting a stomach bug becomes risky for
me. For this reason as well as because I get frequent migraines that have
nausea and dry heaving that accompany them and my neurologist keeps me
stocked with a Rx of Phenergan suppositories to combat the throwing up. I
also have a phobia about staying away from people who I even think are
getting sick with a bug of some sort just due to the fact of what it does
to me. Not everyone goes through this though. On here and in real life I
know some post-ops are like myself and cannot throw up and then there are
those who can do it with no problems. I am not sure what determines if
someone can or not but apparently it can go either way. I think the best
person to talk to about this would be your surgeon and then anyone who has
had surgery by your prospective surgeon as there may be something about the
technique involved in a particular surgeon's style of performing the
surgery that dictates whether or not the person can throw up afterwards.
Hope this helps some.

I'm also 10 years out. I have never thrown up since surgery. I had a
virus about 4 years ago which I only acted like a threw up, but it was
nothing but saliva. Actually, I wish I could have. I might have felt
better.
