Question:
protein supplements
Does anyone know of any protein supplements. I have a hard time getting in 60-80 grams per day. For me it would be easier to swallow. Thanks in advance. — savoy7658 (posted on January 9, 2010)

I use Chocolate SF Carnation instant breakfast, 1 scoop of unflavored Whey
Factors (I get it at the health food store) and 1 cup of skim milk. 30
grams of protein in 1 serving. I have been doing that for breakfast and
lunch, so I have 60 plus whatever I eat for dinner.

I like the ready-made Chocolate Premier Protein drink, with 30g protein, and
Protein Shots (that I dilute with water), with 25g protein. I buy both at
CostCo.

I use Unjury. It's a bit pricey but well worth it.

I am new to this, (just had surgery on Jan 4th) but pre-op and starting
tomorrow, i'm going to be back on the "Pure Protein" shakes sold
by Trader Joe's. You can get them in chocolate or Vanilla and in 21g or 35
grams for a 12 oz serving ! Hope it helps !

Unjury is the best and can be bought online, but it is pricey. The biggest
advantage is that they have an unflavored version you can add to anything.
You can find protein drinks at Walmart that have more than 10-15 grams and
that is what I used. The ones the doctor recommended were very expensive
and undrinkable. I finally gave the last ones away a year and a half later.
Good luck.

I am VERY fussy! So far my very favorite is Unjury chocolate. I don't
care for the strawberry sorbet (trying to choke one down now). I do not
care for any of the Chike flavors. Got samples of them all and they are
too thick and bland for me. I've heard great things about GNC Max Protein,
which I will try next. I also like the protein shots from Walmart. They
are like a strong fruit punch flavor. Something different. They are like
$18 for 10 of them. It seems that everybody has different tastes, so
you'll kind of have to try each one yourself. I hope this helps and best
of luck to you.

I personally like BariatricEating.com's Inspire Peanut Butter Cookie
protein powder the best. But, it's VERY pricey, has more calories, fat and
carbs than I like, and I only use it as a treat. BE also has a brand of
ready-to-drink latte-type protein drinks that are delicious, but once
again, a lot too pricey, and a little more in calories, fat and carbs than
I like. I found that the other protein powders, like the ones you can get
at WalMart or Costco (including the Atkins shakes and stuff like that),
although they might be acceptable in cost, are either delicious but do not
have as much protein as I want AND have more calories and carbs that I want
to mess with, or I don't like the flavor at all. For instance, EAS, which
you can get at Costco, is fairly cheap compared to others, but I'm not
thrilled with the taste, and besides, it has 132 calories and 2 grams of
fat per serving, where Syntrax Nectar Sweets Chocolate Truffle (which you
can get at GNC or the Vitamin Cottage) has 23 grams of protein, 100
calories, zero fat, and only 1 carb...and Syntrax Nectar Fuzzy Navel (and
their other fruit-flavored drinks) has 23 grams of protein, 90 calories,
zero fat and zero carbs. And I LOVE the Oh Yeah vanilla ready-to-drink
protein shake, but it's got something like 220 calories and NINE grams of
fat, and four carbs. One good thing in its favor though, is that it's got
32 grams of protein. So, it's kind of a trade off. I try to find a
balance between the protein content, calories, fat and carbs, and so far,
for the money, the Syntrax Nector Sweets Chocolate Truffle has worked best
for me. If you want to have the option of trying LOTS of different kinds
of protein supplements, both powdered and ready-to-drink, you might want to
purchase the protein sample box from BariatricEating.com. It's a little
pricey, but cheaper than you'd pay buying single serving packets of all the
different flavors and manufacturers they'll send you. And I found that I
really liked several of the products, and really DIDN'T like some of the
others that people have recommended on this board, so I didn't waste my
money buying huge containers of stuff that I wouldn't like and then not
using them. As far as the protein "bullets" - I would buy them
at the Vitamin Shoppe or GNC (they carried the ones with something like 40
grams of protein), and instead of trying to drink them straight, I'd make
up a big cup of fruit-flavored herbal tea, and add half a bullet to the
cup. For instance, I'd use an orange flavored bullet with Tangerine Orange
Zinger tea; or a blue raspberry, fruit punch, or grape bullet with Wild
Berry Zinger tea. I would add one packet of Splenda, and the combination
of tea, protein supplement, and sweetener tasted really good! Refreshing,
tangy, and warm - felt good on my pouch. When the surgeon told me that it
was time to give up the supplements, I was sad, because I liked the way
they tasted. But... I wasn't sad NOT to have to pay for them anymore.
