Exercise won't prevent excess skin because exercise tones muscle only, and skin contains no muscle. Again and again over the years people have raised this question. The younger you are, the lower your starting weight, the luckier you were in the gene lottery, the less excess skin you're likely to have, but, unless you're a charmed being, you're bound to have some stretched-out, excess skin as the cost of massive weight loss. It was a price I was willing to pay (including the cost of the plastic surgery to remove it).

I agree with the other poster. I am almost two years out and my skin is still shrinking. I can tell in my face and arms by pictures that were taken 6 months ago that it has shrunk. It just takes time. It also depends on your start weight. Mine was 224, and my top weight was 240. I am 5'2". See my Profile.

I have lost a little over 70 pounds since my RNY 2 June 2009 and I walk a mile every morning and use Leslie Sansone (sp) Walk Away The Pounds (2 mile) on M-W-F with a few friends at a gym and then 3 days a week I go to Curves. I have very little loose skin so far and the little I do have does not worry me since I am no longer on DM II or Hypertensive medications any longer. I began walking the day I came home from the hospital. I virtually have no pain in my back, hips, and knees. Exercise has to become an integral part of your revoery AND journey back to good health. Hope this helps, Karen

I had VSG surgery in June of 2008. I have lost 80 pounds now and the only place I have loose skin is a little on my abdomen. From the moment I was told by my surgeon that I could exercise I have exercised by walking 2 to 3 miles everyday, doing floor exercises and working out with weights. Part of the skin issue is based on what the good Lord gave us. If your skin has good elasticity your chances of not having a great deal of loose skin is better. But most certainly exercise is so very important. Toning as well as fat burning exercise will make a big difference. I was blessed with good skin and never even got stretch marks with my pregnancies. And I am so thankful that I have been fortunate not to have a lot of loose skin. I couldn't have afforded to have a surgery to have it removed. Just do the best you can with focusing on exercise and being the healthiest you can be. You will do fine.

exercise has a big deal with avoiding skin loss. also look at your parents see how much elasticity their skin has that can have a major effect on it. no exercise is a bad idea just do as much as your body can handle.
