Question:
Has anyone had a DS over Gastric Bypass?
I had gastric bypass in 7/2004 and went from 265 down to 130 lbs. Over the last 2yrs I've gained 60lbs and feeling very bad about myself. Should I go with Lapband over Bypass or DS over Bypass? Any success stories? — margaritac (posted on September 12, 2009)

The Gastric Bypass and the Duodenal Switch are similar types of surgery.
While you can have a revision to a DS from the RnY, it is not possible to
have one "over" the other. Both the DS and the RnY have a
"bypass" component to their design. The difference is that the
DS has 80 percent or so of the stomach removed, and the bypassed intestine
is connected to the bottom of the stomach, while the RnY simply has the top
section of the stomach cut and isolated from the bottom, and has the
bypassed intestine connected to the side of the resultant pouch. In order
to get the RnY revised to a DS, the stomach must be sewn back together, and
then have the sleeve created from the reconstituted stomach. Then, the
bypassed intestine must be rerouted so that the intestine connects to the
bottom of the stomach instead of the side of the former pouch. It is not
easy, but it can be done. It also may be worth your time and effort, since
the DS is the most effective form of weight loss surgery. I hop this
answers your question. Hugh

Instead of more surgery what is preventing you from reducing calories and
increasing your activity level? Do you have a surgical failure like a
stretched stoma and/or other physical disabilities now?
