Question:
why do they say not to drink alcohol for a year after gastric bypass

there is a risk of cross addiction, plus alcohol is pretty much empty calories. plus it is pretty carb-y and could cause dumping syndrome if you drink a sugary cocktail. my particular surgeon said no alcohol for 30 days after surgery and that an occasional alcoholic beverage will not significantly hinder weight loss. you can't really drink that much of it anyway without getting really crocked after RNY anyway.

Not only what the other poster said, but it depletes your body of the nutrients you are stuggling to get, and also, causes dehydration. I've heard you get drunk really fast. It just doesn't sound good for the body. I just leave it alone. I used to have a little glass of wine now and then pre op. but not now. Good luck!

I enjoy a glass of wine or 1/2 lite beer once in a while. I would wait a few months. If your going to drink, do it at home the first time to see how you react. Never drive after any alcohol. It affects us differently. You would be surprised how little it takes to get tipsy.

I can't even drink NyQuil without getting a "Buzz" so I stay away from the alcohol. I didn't have a real drink and got very sick. So I stay away. I wonder if it depends on if you drank pre op? hmmm

all I can say is don't drink! with food no longer my "friend" after gastric bypass 12/05 sure I lost over 120 lbs! went from a size 24 to size 10 but... I became an alcoholic you know, switched addictions. Now I go to AA and have been sober for over 5 months but now I'm addicted to sugar. BE CAREFUL! rny bypass surgery fixes your body, but what to do about one's brain?

Love of God!!! I drank alcohol 3 months after surgery and have had no problems whatsoever. When I'm out with my girlfriends, I drink 6 Coronna or more and don't get any more buzzed than usual. If you don't have an addictive personality, then you won't get addicted....if you were using food as a crutch, then you will use the alcohol as a crutch. You decide but don't let people scare you into believing you can't have a drink.....have one!!!! What's the point of going through the surgery if you can't live a normal life....have some fun!!!!!

I agree with Fredricka! Alcohol affects me no different now than it did before surgery. I am a young girl and drink on the weekends with my freinds just like before- the rest of the time I keep it healtthy- so am I still losing weight? YES! Alcohol only becomes a problem if you are choosing it OVER food- just be careful and have fun!
