There are a lot of the VSG forum who had problems and have already converted to the VSG or are going to get the VSG.

I personally have not had any complications other than the occasional need for an unfill after getting something stuck. I have a friend that has had 3 port infections and had to have it replaced twice. I also know of two people who have had erosions and have had to have the LapBand removed. Even with these complications, they still don't regret their decision and have lost a lot of weight. Other than that, I have met hundreds of people who are thrilled with their bands and are doing well. Best of luck, Dawn Vickers, RN, BLC, CLC

I had lapband in Aug., 2004. Had lots of problems from the very start. Pain swallowing, night coughing, lots of throwing up, acid reflux. Couldn't sleep at night. Suffered with the cough for many months because I hadn't been told that coughing could be a complication from the lapband. Thought it was sinus infection, etc. Would wake up during the night strangling like I was drowning. Would throw up, spit up during sleep. The food went down really really slow whenever I'd have a barium swallow. One year after having the lapband, developed a hernia at the port sight and had surgery to repair the hernia and had a smaller port put in a different place. Had emergency surgery to remove the lapband in Oct., 2006, because the upper "pouch" had distended and ballooned out above the band. It took 1 1/2 years to get approved for gastric bypass during which time I gained back the 75 lbs. I'd lost with the band, plus 20 more. I had gastric bypass in May 2008, and have lost 95 lbs. with no problems, no complications, and still losing. Needless to say, I'd definitely recommend gastric bypass over the lapband! Good luck to you.

Other than the occasional "stuck" and using Papaya enzyme to relieve I had no complications the 1st 1 1/2 yrs. I have developed "reflux" at night & now sleep on several pillows to prevent. I have lost 115 lbs so far. I personally know 2 other people with lap bands. One had vomiting issues & has had an unfill twice.

My Lap-Band is a nightmare! I had it done in June 2006. I gained back all my weight plus 30 pounds :-( Turns out there is a malfunction with my band- I had severe abdominal pain all the time and no matter how much or little fill is in it, the food won't go down and I was sick all the time. I am having gastric bypass (fingers crossed in a few weeks) and I think had I done more research in the first place I would have chosen this all along.
