Question:
2 months post-op and lost 57 pounds....is this a good rate or should I be losing more
I'm worried that the weight isn't coming off as it's supposed to. I had RNY on 7/25/08 and have since lost 57 pounds. Does that sound like a good number? — nubiangodess624 (posted on October 5, 2008)

I wish I was anywhere near that. I am 7 weeks out from bypass and have only
lost 30. They say I should be at about 40. It sounds like you are on track.
Remember that everyone loses differently. IF you think you could use more
check yourself. Amount you are eating, exercise, fluids and protein. Good
luck.

The wt loss rate is dependent on any number of things. First, are you
following your surgeon's protocol? Exercising? Etc. Larger people will
initially lose wt at a faster rate, and you can't compare the wt loss of a
250 pound person to that of someone 400+ pounds. I had surgery at 320
pounds, and lost 100 pounds in 7 months, for an average of .476 pounds per
day. Some wks no wt loss, others more. I continued to lose wt until I was
24 months post op. My wt now varies between 185 and 189--but that's still a
150+ wt loss in my RNY journey. Patience is needed. Support groups may be
of benefit to you too.You are 9 wks out, and with a 57 lb loss, your rate
is about .79 pounds per day. I would not complain, as that is far better
than I and many others have done. The initial first 6 months is the
"easy part". Losing wt past that 6 month mark is more difficult.
So learn good eating habits now, as you'll need them for continued wt loss
once you're out of the honeymoon period (1st 6 months).. DAVE

That sounds like your doing great. Almost 60lbs since July thats only 2
months ago. You should be glad. I heard its about 20 the first month or
two and then it slows down after that but then picks up again. My surgery
is this Thurs the 9th, I can't wait. I have 100lbs to lose.

It sounds to me that you are right on track! Good job. Your loss is
comparable to mine. I had my surgery on Aug 22, 2008 and I have lost about
45 pounds. Sounds like you are right in the ball park. My Doc says
"are your clothes looser?" That's another good measurement.

I think we all question our weight loss at first...It seems like it just
isn't coming off fast enough...but it falls off at it's own pace and you
are doing wonderful! I was watching an old episode of "Big
Medicine" on Discovery Health Channel...I recently learned they had a
show on GB! Anyway it's a father and son doctor team with a
psychiatrist...I dunno why they need the psych more than a nutritionist,
but the docs seem to be up to date on all the nutrition (and don't need a
nutritionist on their team) and liquid diets (Which I personally do not
understand!) But to the point...The doc told his patient that he wanted
her to lose 10 lbs a month and she wanted to lose more...He said "I'm
sure you do, but I prefer you lose slower as it is healthier for you at 10
lbs a month"...The pateint had started at 390 ish pounds and got down
to 260's and was quite content as were the surgeons. I guess I have much
more drastic opinions and ideas (besides the liquid diets which are as
drastic as drastic gets in my humble, non-medical opinion) So...there is
one surgeon or rather two... who thinks that 10 lbs a month is great! And
you've lost much more than that monthly! It will slow down, so don't
worry...And give yourself a full year! You have got a running start!

Are you serious, you are asking if losing 57 pounds in 2 months is a good
rate. Have you EVER in your life lost that much weight in 2 months?
I think you are doing just fine, enjoy your loss, and keep up the good
work! It will slow down, so please do not get discouraged. Take it one day
at a time and follow your Dr. & Nuts orders!

I am sorry if this sounds harsh, but, are you kidding? You've just lost
57 POUNDS!! As far as I am concerned (and this is just my opinion), ANYONE
would be happy to lose that much weight in 2 months! Besides, you CAN NOT
compare yourself to anyone else, even in approximation! Each and every
person is different, their metabolism, their weight loss goals, their
starting weight, their doctor's orders, etc! Just do what your dr tells you
to do and stop thinking about the numbers, think about how much better you
are feeling with that weight gone!
For the "other" Anita, the liquid pre-op diet is to shrink your
liver before surgery. If you do not shrink your liver, the surgeon can not
move it out of the way to do the RNY, then you will need to have OPEN
surgery, not a good option in most opinions.
Good luck with your journey!

I had surgery on 7-22-08 and have lost 48 lbs... and I think I'm doing
great... so that means you're doing fantastic!!
I had to stop thinking about my weight in the usual way. What I did was
break it down to a "real" number in order for me to appreciate
the weight I had lost. To do the same, let me break it down for you, using
the same method:
your surgery was 10 weeks ago... take the 57 divide it by the 10 weeks and
you have lost 5.7 pounds a week (averaged out). THIS IS FANTASTIC!!!!!
I know the plateaus are worrisome, but look at the OVERALL picture and you
have amazing results!
Keep up the good work!!!!!!!!!!!!

You are losing a LOT faster than I did. With such rapid weight loss, please
be sure that your doctor has prescribed something for you to help prevent
gall stones.
