Lap Band is less envasive than Lap RYN. In the Lap Band a band is placed
around your stomach. In Lap RYN the stomach is actually physically made
smaller and is re routed to the intestine (the Y) There is more healing
time with RYN, but you do lose more weight with RYN then Lap Band. I
originally had wanted Lap Band and after much research decided on RYN. You
need to do some research yourself and decide what fits your needs best.

The Lap in RNY means laproscopic, that means they do the procedure with
camera and small tools so that they dont have to open you completly up. Lap
Band means they place a band around your stomach rather then cutting it
like they do in RNY. Studies have shown that the same amount is generally
lost between the two surgeries however RNY does produce faster results.

Lapband surgery is less invasive and may be done in a surgical office, or
just one day at the hospital. RNY is done under general anestheic, and
requires a normal 2-3 day hospital stay. Lapband requires
"fills", to adjust the band, which may or may not be paid by your
insurance. Lapband surgery is designed for less wt loss over a 1 1/2 to 2
year time frame, with a 60-80 wt loss range. For heavier people, the RNY is
a much better chioce, as it's results tend to be more successful. Sugars
can be consumed by most patients with lapband, and sugars can cause many
RNY people to "dump" (feel nausiated, ill, diarrhea, anxiety,
etc) at very minor amounts of sugar. Both surgeries require behavior
modification for long term results. Lapband heals in a few days, while RNY
may take up to 3 months to fully heal. But this is not a painful healing
process either. If you have more wt to lose than 80 pounds, the RNY would
probably work better. DAVE

Lap bad add a foregin devise to your stomach and stomach area that is
inflated to control the amount of food that goes into your gut. Lap RNY is
the same exterior sergury but you have a pouch made, the stomak set asside
and the first third of the small intestine contected to the last third.
The middle part becoms the new stomack of about the size of a man's thumb
and the strat of your intestines for processing food. You lose more weight
because you can not absore fat, sugar or many carbs. This causes you
malnutrion for the rest of your life, but a much faster way to lose more
and keep it off.

There are two different nomenclatures that you need to be aware of when
dealing with Weight Loss Surgery. Sometimes the terms that are used sound
similar and can be confusing. There is the Lap-Band, and the RNY (which is
often done laparoscopically), and then there is a procedure called the
Lap-RNY. Now, there are TWO ways to perform the RNY. There is the OPEN
RNY, in which the surgeons operate on the patient with a large incision,
and the LAPAROSCOPIC RNY, in which the surgeons operate through several
SMALL incisions using a LAPAROSCOPE. These are NOT to be confused with the
LAP-RNY which is ACTUALLY the SAME RNY as EITHER of those two procedures
but with the ADDED insurance of a LAP-BAND around the POUCH that is created
during the procedure! SOME people use the term Lap-RNY to DEFINE the
PROCEDURE that is used for the RNY that uses Laparoscopy instead of open
surgery. Others use it to define the procedure that places the Lap-Band
around the Gastric Pouch that is created using EITHER procedure. Frankly,
I tend to lean toward the LATTER definition, but THAT is MY preference.
Yes, the healing time IS different between the two types of surgery. It is
about the difference between the healing times between the Lap-Band and the
RNY. I hope that this helps. If you need more information, check out my
home page and look for my post titled "Surgical Comparisons" at:

. If you can't find the post on my profile page, look for it in the March
2008 archives. Use the information that you find there to start your own
research. DO your own research. It is VITAL that you do your OWN research
and NOT rely on others to do it for you because the people on the boards
are BIASED in favor of their OWN SURGERY! I have had the Vertical Sleeve
Gastrectomy, and I will TELL you in all HONESTY that I truly BELIEVE that
it is the BEST SURGICAL OPTION for MOST PEOPLE! That is not to say that it
is the best surgical option for YOU! Only YOU and your SURGEON can make
that decision! There are people on the boards who will RIDICULE you for
MAKING that decision if they think you have made the WRONG ONE! I am NOT
one of those, but they are OUT there. They are the same people who will
give you BAD ADVICE when it comes to your surgical options, so you cannot
RELY on them to give you what you need. DO YOUR OWN RESEARCH! I hope this
helps. Hugh

I'm sorry, but I think that you should completely ignore what Hugh and
(William)Bill have said!
Others have gotten it right, though. The lap-RNY is the term that is used
for the laproscopic RNY surgery. There is open RNY, lap-RNY, and the Lap
Band.
In the Lap band surgery, they will insert a silicone ring around a portion
of your stomach. It requires several visits to the surgeon for
"fills". That is when they put more silicone in the ring to
reduce the size of the opening to restrict food intake.
The Lap RNY, the surgeon makes about 5 small incisions in your abdomen and
inserts a camera and some surgical tools to section off part of your
stomach (nothing is removed), they then cut the lower part of the small
intestines and re-route it up to your "pouch". Then they take the
bypassed intestines and attach that to the bottom part of your regular
stomach as it still produces the stomach acids required for digestion. The
stomach acids combine with your food much further down in the system than
"normal", therefore causing the food to bypass the small (or
large, can't remember which) so that the calories (and much of the
nutrients) are not absorbed into the body. Now, because your body does not
get it's nutrients from the food, you will be on vitamin supplements for
probably the rest of your life. However, in my opinion, it is much better
for me to be taking supplements than having to live with being fat,
ostracized, and un-healthy.
The open RNY is when they cut an incision from your sternum to your belly
button, sometimes lower, depending on the case. The doctors will do the
same thing that they do with lap-RNY, but through an open site instead of
through the small holes. This is necessary if someone is extremely obese,
over 500lbs usually, sometimes lower, depending on the fat around the
stomach.
Alot of doctors will insist that you lose some weight before the lap RNY so
that it shrinks your liver so that it is easier to get to the stomach as
the liver is "in the way". This is why many people end up on a
liquid diet or on protein drinks before surgery.
I hope that I have answered your question satisfactorly. If you have any
more questions, you will find some sites on the main board that will direct
you to info about the various surgeries.
Good luck to you!
