I was about 4 weeks out when I couldn't go with a salad any longer. I did fine on it, but I had some friends that were the same time out that said, they couldn't handle it. I would give it another week. Then when you do. Chew it really good. Start out simple without too many things in there besides lettuce, with maybe a little small pieces of meat and cheese. That will give it a little protein for you as well. Lesleigh

I started with salad at 5 weeks and it was OK but not great...Lettuce seems to be ok but tomatos were bad...I am now 9 weeks out and am handling a small amount of salad fine...I also eat wraps. I can eat about a third to a half of a wrap depending on what is in there and how stuffed it is. I eat fajitas well maybe one fajita...The tortillas don't bother me at all...

I had salad about 4-5 weeks post op. Plain iceberg lettuce with fat free dressing. Breads can be an issue with some post ops, and it's best to try whole wheat breads as toast first, with a little bit of peanut butter (for protein) on it. DAVE

Once you've got the OK from your dr to start more solid foods, salad should be OK. Try to not eat the 'skin' on tomatoes and green peppers at first...they're harder to chew down small and harder to digest. Shred carrots if you eat them on your salad...and don't eat too many of them. As a few of the previous people said, be sure and chew thoroughly. Also...heavy salad dressings (things w/a lot of mayo or fat) are likely to make you sick...so try to stick to a light oil/vinegar dressing...or if you can, even just lemon juice and a little salt and pepper is good and fat free. I've found now that I enjoy my salads more w/nothing on them...I enjoy the flavors of the veggies themselves much better. As you move along from your surgery, you can add some beans (chickpeas, kidney beans, etc) and or chopped turkey or grated cheese to add some protein to your salad.

FIRST--ask your doctor; they all have different views on this, but that will be the individual taking care of you I started my first "salad" at 3 1/2 weeks. To this day, I'd love to go into a restaurant and get a REAL salad, but reality for me is protein first and then supplement with veggies. With that in mind, my salad consists of about 4-5 pieces of spinach or romaine lettuce (hospital NUT said not to iceberg because romaine has more nutrients), a little fat free Feta on top, and 4-5 shrimp. I might add a couple of slivered almonds and have done tiny tiny bits of tomato without problem.

I was almost 8 weeks out before I could eat salad. That was the thing I missed the most, but hang in there you will get salad soon. Hugs Char

I was way pass 3 years before I was able to eat any type of salads and wrap and many other food groups. After 11+ years I can eat almost anything as long as I chew my food, and sip my water between meals. Dani

I feel so blessed reading your responses. I have never had a problem with lettuce from the first day I could have solid foods, tomatoes are wonderful with a little salt and pepper, and in fact help meat to go down easier. Green peppers like Jalapenos are nice and no problems. I do recommend the meat and cheese, like fat free ham or turkey or roast beef. I like Swiss cheese, Mozzarella , Provolone, Cheddar cheeses etc. Shredded is best. Do chew any greens well and take it slow. Avoid fatty salad dressings, but you might try a little yogurt, sour cream, salsa, piquante sauce or guacamole on your salad. Guacamole has fat, but it's a vegetable fat and may even help lower cholesterol. olives, if not salty are good, I like the ripe olives on mine. A dash of olive oil and Balsamic or Tarragon vinegar makes a nice dressing too. Some people, for reasons best known to them, enjoy tofu strips in their salad. Enjoy your salad and mange bueno. Dusty

I couldn't eat raw veggies til I was a good 3 months out...Onions KILLED ME! They would make my pouch just ache...and I LOVE onions...It took over a year before I could eat raw onions...Anything acidy is rough too...Goslow and see how it feels...at the first signs of any discomfort, just stop...That's all! Wraps were one of my favorite first solid foods out. I make them all the time or pick them up when I am on the go...

I am almost 7 month post-op and eat different types of wraps. I get only meat, cheese, alvachado (sp?) and maybe a tomato on them ... no lettuce. Lettuce gives you very little nuitrience ... pretty much like water to your body. Which is not a bad thing ... but when protein is so important ... I try to eat as much meat as I can and leave out the lettuce so I don't waste room in my stomach with any lettuce. Also, only eat about 1/4 to maybe 1/2 of the tortilla. Same as lettuce ... pushing the meats and veggies ... just eat little amounts of those things that my body doesn't need.

Tortillas and bread don't sit real well in our tummies. It kind of feels like a rock in there.
