Question:
POLL: Who has had problems from surgery, and who have not.
Just trying to get a poll of how many people have had problems from having GBS and how many people have not had any issues. And would you do it again iF you knew it would end this way. Thanks Pug — pugsley101 (posted on September 5, 2008)

I had my Gastric Bypass Surgery (Lap) on 4/29/08 and have NOT had 1
problem! I would do it all over again in a heartbeat! It definately is a
life changing experience. You have to learn how to eat all over again, but
it IS well worth it!! It will make you feel like a whole new person..and
make you look like one too!! Good Luck to you!!God Bless!!

Hello,
YES... I would do it over again with NO second thought! Yes, I have had
issues. My GBS was done 7/1/08. I am down 45lbs, would be more but I am not
able to do the walking. That is do to other health issues. I had trbl with
a SLIGHT collapsed lung, that worked out just fine. I do vomit from some
fooods..but I am not out to win a race and am very happy to use my tool
very slowly. I also am VERY lucky to have a most wonderful support group
here in Fl. My Dr. & the entire staff are wonderful. Any time I have
called them they have answered my questions and been there for me. I saw
many other surgeons before my surg as I drove others to their DR.appts. I
can honestly say no matter what office I have been in..NO ONE has ever said
they would not do the surg again. Everone has done this for their
health..and we all want and need or good health. I wish you peace and good
health with what ever YOU decied to do.

Yes, I had problems and a very big YES! I would do it again, but this time
I would not think about and reseach the issues for three years. Everything
has problems when you get into your sixtys, but the ral question you need
to ask is how many problems did it solve. I had Diabities for 25 year,
took 18 drugs and insulin, took High Blood pressure medication and had High
Colestroal and took drugs for that. I had complications for the last 20
years from the diabities and they will not go away, but today I do not have
diabities, high blood pressure or High Colestroal. I take one drug and my
vitamin supliments, and that drug is for thyroid. I feel better than I
every have, and weigh less than I did in highshool. Why would I not do it
over again? Everyone will have something, and no one has everything, but I
appreciate the fact that I get sick from sugar, fat and actually too many
carbs. I just can't eat them, and I do miss pasta and white bread, but
then I am alive, and will be fore a lot more years then any doctor would
have given me just two years ago.

19 months out. LAP RNY on 2/15/07. My only "issue" was insomnia
& four periods the first month after surgery. BUT... I wouldn't
consider these deal breakers. I looked at them as the road I needed to walk
down to get to the new me. Would I do it again? Sure. In a heartbeat.
Original high 286lbs. 5'8". Wore size 26/28 pants and 20/22 tops. I am
currently 143lbs. (exactly 1/2 of my former self) and wearing a size 4/6
pants and small or extra small tops. I am happy. I am healthy and thank my
luck stars everyday for this surgery. ;) hope that helps you. good luck.

I had my surgery on March 12, 2008. To date I have lost 112 lbs. Surgery
went well. Recovery went well too. I can honestly say I was NEVER in any
pain. I stopped taking pain medicine the second day I was home from the
hospital ... was going to take it as needed ... never needed it again!!
The anastesia (SP?) was my only problem ... and it was not really a
"problem". I think they gave me too much and it took me hours to
wake up. I did the same thing 10+ yrs ago when I had surgery. So now I
know my body does not need that much anastesia. So if I ever have surgery
again, I will take to the anastesialogist about it. Was tired and weak for
a few weeks after surgery. Wish I had done this years ago!!!

I am 14 months post op and have lost 96 lbs. The only 'complication' I had
was my gall bladder out last Dec. (very easy surgery). When they removed it
they found multiple old scars so this had actually been an on going problem
that resolved other issues. It has been a blast--it has been a job
learning the new life style but so worth it. Yes I would surely do it
again. Christine

I am 5-1/2 weeks post-op (GBS) and at times I say to myself "what in
the world have you done" but I've also lost 31 pounds (it took my 18
months to lose 30 pounds on WW!) I have had no problems so I hope a bit
down the road I will be able to say that this was the best thing I've ever
done for myself. Not quite there yet but I am so excited about the
continuing weight loss. So, so far so good.

NO problems at all. I would do it again if necessary.
This won't be a fair poll because most people without problems have likely
stopped getting these E-mails and gone on with their lives. I am about to
opt-out myself.

I would do it over and over again although I will never have to. This has
taught me so much. I had gotten an ulser 3 weeks after my surgery and have
burping constantly after I eat or drink, but I can deal with that.

I am nine months out, I've lost 80 lbs including 20 I lost before surgery.
I have had constipation, a little nausia, and had to have my gall-bladder
out on the 4th of July. I was not prepared for the skin. It took a while
to understand that I would never be able to eat the same again. Following
all the rules, and changes was hard. Drinking enough, getting the right
amount of protein. One day of doing this wrong will end u up feeling like
crap. That does not go away, from what I can see. All that being
said....Yes! I would do it again in a heartbeat. I am 49 years old, and
off all blood pressure meds. I never did the sleep study. But I don't
wake myself up gasping anymore. My agility is unbelievable. I cleaned out
the refridgerater last week, a narrow side-by-side, and was squating down
half in the thing, and smiled to myself when I realized I couldn't have
done that before surgery!! I couldn't squat at all before, or i'd fall
over! Lot's of WOW moments. This is an interesting question. Because as
in any area of peoples lives. It is different for everyone. Complications
are few with some, and alot with some. I wish you luck on your WL Journey!

I had surgery almost 11 months ago, and have lost 152 pounds. I have had no
complications. YES, YES, YES, I would have the surgery again. And I will do
whatever it takes to stay healthy now that I'm here! My lifestyle is
completely different from this time last year and I'm not ever going back!

I will be 5 months on Sunday and have lost 93lbs and have only had a few
times I have felt sick to my stomach but never thrown up and no other
problems to speak of I would go right now to have the surgery again if I
had to.

Hi Pug!
I am someone a little farther out from everyone else. I am currently six
years out and I have had a few problems and a few more surgeries. My most
current problem is that I also think I malabsorb my prescription meds. I
have not found anyone else with this problem though so not sure if it's
just my own personal theory. But I am a member of the century club...
started at 281 lbs and now am still only 170. Although I would like to be
about 20 lbs lighter, I am happy in the size I'm in. I would most
definitely do it all over again, despite my problems. I hope that helps.

fighting horrible fatigue at the moment, this too shall pass. Yes, I would
definitely do it again. Good Luck

YES!!!!!!!!!!!! I don't regret a day. I am 7 months post-op as well and
have lost 99 lb. The only complication I had was a stricture about 3 months
out. It was easily fixed with no pain and no recovery time. Other than that
everything has been wonderful. I still have never thrown up!!!!
Goood luck and God bless!!

Had lap RNY 06/05/2007. Lost 110 pounds. Would do it again in a
heartbeat. No problems except for the invariable plateaus that can drive
you mad!!!

I am 18 weeks out from lap RNY and 78lbs down ... I consider myself blessed
that I was approved by my insurance on the first attempt. I love Blue
Shield for giving me the opportunity to start my life all over again. There
are days I am pissed off that I can't have a Diet Coke or go grab a piece
of candy from my supervisor's office ... Then I remind myself that Diet
Coke and pieces of candy are part of the reason I ended up needing the
surgery, and I get over it real quick. :-) I would do it again in a
heartbeat, without a doubt, no questions asked.

Had my RNY surgery 4+ years ago...Kept my weight off all this
time...Learned that you can gain weight by grazing...or eating non stop all
day...So I don't do that! But I did and gained 10 lbs...Took me 4 months to
lose it! That was not fun! But I did it...I stopped taking my vits
regularly because I thought I didn't need them daily, I mean, IF I can gain
10 lbs I MUST be getting my nutrition, right? WRONGO!!!!! Uh, not true!
I still malabsorb fat and vitamins because of low stomach acid and a by
passed small intestines where nutrients are mainly absorbed...AND, I still
aborb calories JUST FINE! So...surgery related
malnutrition...NO...operater malfunction! I was stooooopid! So I suffered
anemia for 2 months...and several fat soluble vitamin deficiencies and
magnesium def. Just started taking my vits again and supplementing my defs
until I got them back at the right levels...Took the RIGHT iron for
RNY...and I'm back in the healthy business! Took 6 months to get my vits
right...Not too bad. Can't blame the surgery if you don't follow the
rules...

From 22 prescriptions to 3, from 700 units of insulin to 64, a loss of over
60 pounds since July 2nd, and I haven't weighed in a week? Yes, despite
complications and infections, I'd do it again. It sure beats dying.
— Dusty Ray Vaughn
September 6, 2008
Yes I would do it again. I wish I had done it years ago. No surgery related
problems at all. I'm 11 1/2 months post op, have lost 115 pounds. No
longer deal with sleep apnea, high blood pressure, diabetes, high
cholesterol, acid reflux, joint pain, and probably others. All are gone.
And as a special bonus, I look good and my clothes fits!!!

September 6, 2008
This is a question I ask myself fairly often. I am a little over 7 years
out, and while I have done well with the weight loss and am only about 15
pounds over my personal current goal, I have had issues with the surgery.
At a little over 18 mos. out I had a bowel obstruction requiring surgery.
Then after what felt like a long recovery I was fairly free of too many
major issues for several years. Then in 2006 I started getting episodes of
intense pain, centered in my upper abdomen, that would sometimes last up to
8 hours. It was periodic, maybe every 3 - 4 weeks. I went through all the
tests (some more than once), CT scans, ultrasounds, endoscopy, colonoscopy,
MRI, etc. and all they came up with was an enlarged bile duct. Then one
day in late Sept. 2007 I started throwing up and was very nauseous, saw the
Dr. and she gave me an IV for dehydration and said it was probably a flu
bug. Four days into this I was hit with the worst pain EVER, doubled over
and unremitting, gut wrenching pain. After several hours of it I couldn't
take it any longer and my husband took me to the ER. To try and shorten
this saga up...I had emergency surgery at 5:30 in the morning and they
found my transverse colon had flipped over and was being drawn backward
through an internal hernia. This time I lost about 18" of colon, had a
large band of scar tissue removed and an umbilical hernia fixed. I spent 11
days in the hospital and feel like I am still not fully recovered almost a
year later. So, problems can happen, they don't happen to everyone, thank
God. I've done this thing pretty much the right way, most of the past 7
years; took lots of vites and supplements, drank my protein, paid attention
to people farther out than me and still had problems. Besides the two
surgeries, I have had vitamin deficiencies, very low iron requiring
infusions, terrible stinky gas, difficulty with constipation since the last
surgery, sometimes able to eat without problems and other times nothing
seems to want to go down...so you can see why I am not sure if I would do
this again. I am not perfect by any stretch of the imagination (carb
monster rears it's ugly head at times) but overall I would say I've been
pretty compliant with all this surgery requires of you post-op. This may
sound harsh but for those of you who say you hate the protein shakes, get
over it...not only can it save you from serious deficiencies, it will help
keep the weight off and help your health overall. There are lots of
options out there, my personal favorite resource for finally finding the
right protein and the vitamins, for ME, is www.vitalady.com, and no, I
don't work for them, I just believe in what Michelle and Don do. So, for
all those thinking about this surgery, those who have recently had it, and
anyone else that has this surgery themselves or is close to someone who has
had it or wants to have it, just know it is very serious business, a
lifetime commitment and not something to think of as a quick and easy fix.
It is life changing, will hopefully help you feel better and improve your
quality of life, but take good care of yourself and do all YOU can to make
it work. It IS NOT the easy way out, and I know anyone who has had it
knows that. Is my life better, yes, amazing things have happened the past
7 years, a husband, a child, and self-respect, and so much more, but it has
been very hard at times and offers daily challenges for me. Read, research,
listen to those that are more than 1 year out, they know of what they
speak. I wish you all well and much success no matter what you do.
Blessings,
— ALF

I am 11 weeks out and have had no problems..knock on wood. I would do this
over again in a heart beat. I would listen to the doctors and nurses more
-I got dehydrated for the first three weeks and had no weight loss--but
that was my own fault for not drinking like they said to... other than
this...it has been relatively easy. I work out for an hour at curves and go
walking int he evenings. I have tons of energy and sleep less. Hope this
helps you out! hugs,

I am 17 months out of RNY and as far as I am concerned my life began 17
months ago. I can attend my grandchildren's soccer games (4 per Saturday),
run up and down the stairs at school, climb up in my deer stand without
losing my breath, sleep without being in pain, etc......I could go on and
on. What is there to even think about here? It is possibly the best
decision I have ever made in my entire life aside from my salvation and my
children.

I had surgery on 6/4/08 and have lost 37 lbs without having any problems.
Immediately after returning home from surgery I was able to discontinue my

I had laproscopic bypass Oct 4, 2005. I would do it again in a
heartbeat!!!! I know I was one of the fortunate ones who hasn't had any
complications related to surgery (ok, it exxagerated a vitamin deficency I
had anyway, but that's it).
I have even had a son since surgery AND not only got down to my pre-preg
weight (I had stabilized at 135-137) but lost a bit further so that now my
new norm seems to be 125-128!!!

My RNY surgery was 7/17/ on 7/18 they were deciding if I needed more
surgery because I had a bleed. Thankfully 3 units of blood and 2 of plasma
stopped it. As a result, I've had a longer recovery and haven't
expereienced that burst of energy I hear and have read about that others
experience. I have my rare pity parties where I want to go out and have a
big salad or some beef--they usually come when I'm over tired. Would I do
it all over again . . . without a doubt YES. I'm down 35 lbs; I still get
hungry, but not the overwhelming hunger that I used to get; no more high BP
pills and asthma/allergy meds are down to just advair daily and an
occasional claritan. I got rid of TONS of pills and that was just great!

I had gastric bypass in june, 08 and I amdown 52 lbs as of this week! I did
develop pnemonia after my surgery and had to be readmitted to the hospital
for 3 more days. It was scarey at the time;but, I HAVE NO REGRETS. I feel
great! My diabetes is gone, my cholesterol is the lowest it has ever been
in my life and I am moving SO much better. Good luck to you.
