Question:
Any help for vomitting 4 weeks out?
I had RNY July 2, and had no problem keeping liquids down. Now I am 1 week into soft food and have problems with nausea and vomitting, usually after drinking milk or other liquids. Not after soft foods. I space my liquids apart from my food as directed by my doctor, I take small sips of the liquids when drinking. I've never been lactose intolerant. Any suggestions? I'll call my doctor tomorrow, but could use help now. — dnoreenh (posted on July 28, 2008)

I am not sure about the whole picture you're describing however the milk
raised a red flag. Probably a bit too soon to be drinking milk; stay with
clear liquids like warm tea sweetened with Splenda, Crystal Light
sugar-free drinks, water, sugr-free popsicles, sugar-free jello, clear
fat-free chicken or beef broth. I am 6 months post-op and milk makes me
nauseous sometimes, (not always). If you read the label, milk naturally
contains sugar, which I suspect contributes towards my nausea. Also, some
(not all) people become lactose-intolerant after RNY and need to buy
Lactose-free milk (available at most grovery stores).

I wasn't lactose intolerant before surgery, but I am now. I am 5 years out
and still unable to drink milk. Your system is totally different and there
are going to be things you could tolerate before that you cannot tolerate
now. I'd stop drinking the milk!

I too became somewhat lactose intolerant after my WLS. And, I can only
tolerate drinking distilled water. Tap or bottled water is a sure fire way
to diarrhea for me.
Check in with doc, some nausea and vomiting is normal for a while after
surgery... some longer than others.
Good luck and feel better,

what kind of milk...I can no longer handle whole or 2% next time I go to
the store I am going to get a small carton of 1% and see if thats ok. I
dont get sick but I get gas pains. Im 5 weeks out Ive had milk since I came
home from the hospital low fat milk was on my ok list from the doc. You
said other liquid does it to....what other liquid. Also if you are drinking
it to fast or to big of drinks that might be a problem too.

Milk should raise a red flag. It can cause weight retention, not weight
reduction, and it may cause your metabolism to be sluggish. I know from
experience. I am 3.5 years out from my RNY, lost 135 lbs with 40+ to go
and didn't lose an ounce for the last 2 years. My metabolism was very poor
inspite of eating the right foods (protein, fruits, and vegetables) and
getting lots and lots of exercise besides drinking 96 ounces of liquids
daily. I started attending lots and lots of seminars put on by various
doctors in our area because after 2 years of not budging an ounce, I
started gaining weight. I put on 15 lbs and this did not make me a happy
camper. Across the board, they highly recommended everyone not drink milk.
I had been a strong advocate for milk. But, I followed their advice and
did a 6 week test of not drinking milk, charting my progress. Yes, I
increased my calcium citrate to compensate for not drinking milk, got back
to keeping my daily records in myfitday.com. I began to feel better, my
metabolism greatly improved, and now I am steadily losing weight. I've
lost 20 lbs, and my vitality is incredible. So, in a nutshell, stop the
milk.

Boy, I love all the peoples' answers! You have a new body, things are
different. I too, had issues with liquids - try a "Papaya
Supplement" from GNC, this helps with nausea. I used this for months,
then realized I had more issues and why I couldnt get my liquids down.
Feel free to read my early years on my page. Good luck.

i would answer your question the same way the others did, but i wanted to
add one more thing, what kind of milk are you drinking? if you are using
anything other than fat free milk you may try that and see if things get
better. i would like to suggest Carb Countdown it comes in various flavors
and it's really good, especially the chocolate!!! good luck and remember
your body has been changed dramatically and you will find that alot of
things you ate before that didn't bother you will now, and even some that
you couldn't tolerate before or just didn't like you may like and tolerate
now! it's all about trial and error! stay away from carbs and sugar!!! hope
this helps, Holly
