Michelle - I have this problem when I eat dense proteins (meat) and don't chew it well enough. I am also 2 months post-op and right now, the chewing is my biggest challenge - I'm getting better at it though! Best of luck to you Michelle! I wish you much success. Marsha

Don't eat and drink at the same time. Don't even dring before eating for 15 minutes and wait one hour to drink. Until you are further along, take smaller sips as you are taking too much air down with your drinks. Watch the solid food and make sure you chew it well. I cound 40 cheaws before I swallow. It realy helps the food go down better and you do not take as much air down with the food. Keep the bits small. I burp if I rush my food or drink, but when I take my time, it does not happen. Remember when you were on liquids and soft foods you took less and it was more liquid and less air.

I am almost a year out and I burp quite often during the day, but I don't get the discomfort. I have no problem with the burpinig as I know it's all part of having a smaller stomach. Just make sure you chew chew chew and then swallow and don't drink with your food. Good luck, and God bless!

That is your food and drink after it funnels down through the stoma. It's like a clogged drain that slowly moves down...Just like a clogged drain a little air pocket must escape to allow the food to go down. Sometimes it drags more air down especially with liquids. It's normal!

Michelle, I am 5 years post op and I still experience this. I find that eating to quickly causes it. Even after 5 years it's easy to fall back into old eating habits. Take your time, chew thoroughly. You may still experience burping, but it won't be as bad.

Michelle I think maybe your eating and or drinking too fast. I get that if I drink something too close to eating . Take your time when you eat. I am out 12 months and I will take a bite and go run the sweeper or do something so I am eating slower. Same with gulping or drinking too fast... your pouch is the size of your thumb! take it easy... I had surgery Dec. 17th 2007 and I am going through the same. I was told that it is because I still swallow lots of air while drinking or eating.I have lost a total of 61 lbs, 22 before surgery. You are on the right way, good luck to you!

I'm the belching queen! I can burp three times on one sip of water! I know lots of others that it happens to also, so just get ready to be saying "excuse me" a lot! : )

The short answer is, "Yes!" I, over 101/2 years out of RNY and I burp constantly. When around others, I try to muffle the sound as much as possible. If you've had the RNY procedure, after you start eating "regular" foods again, you'll also probably start experiencing a lot of excess gas coming out the other end as well, like I do. It seems to go with the territory for us RNYers. You can try Maalox, Beano, Tums and all that other stuff if you want. Maybe one of these will work for you; however, NOTHING works for me -- so I just light a candle (if the circumstance permits it) and understand that all the extra gas that comes out of either end is a small price to pay for weight loss, better health, and a longer life of quality.
