Question:
Are spicy foods out after WLS?
I am two weeks out of surgery - no where near eating solids yet, but something just occurred to me.....will I be able to eat spicy foods again? I love Salsa, and the hotter the better, but will this be out of my life now???? — jennw2ns (posted on January 3, 2008)

Hi Jennifer, depends on what your surgeon says, but I can tell you I can
still enjoy very spicy foods with no problem. I love salsa too as well as
Indian foods.

I was eating jalapenos at 7 weeks out. I LOVE spicy food and tons of pepper
on my mashed taters........lol Best of all no more heartburn. Guess the
surgery cleared that up.

unless you have or have had a problem with your stomache like ulcers, etc.
i don't think spicy foods will be a problem. i have always liked spicy
foods, but had trouble with them sometimes before my surgery d/t the acid
reflux, but now i crave the spicy stuff big time and have no problems
eating them! good luck and you will be able to eat solids before you know
it. hope this helps... Holly

OMG, I was eating spicy food on LIQUIDS. Old Bay Seasoning was my best
friend. Yeah, you should be able to handle it. But ask your doctor first.
Some of them like you to wait until you're healed. Mine said it was ok.
It was the only thing that got me through.

Yes you can eat it--it has virtually no calories. BUT, it depends on how
you system responds to it. RNY is not a "clone surgery"--not
everyone responds to the same foods in the same way. I'm guessing you'll
be OK with it, but you won't know until you try. You may have to opt for a
milder version than you liked before surgery. Many people have a change in
their taste buds after surgery. Things they loved prior to surgery don't
taste the same. And, you may find you crave for healthier foods in the near
future.

I'm 4 weeks out and have done Taco Bell refried beans and used the fre
sauce. I've also had (within the last couple of days) chips and salsa
(hot). It's been NO problem for me. But I had a strong (spicy lovin)
stomach before surgery.

Didn't have the RNY, but the VSG, but I can REALLY relate to your question.
I was adding Frito Jalapeno Bean Dip to my soups at 8 days out with no
problem. Love that Mexican flavor. Pat

I am 3 weeks out and never craved "hot" foods before surgery. I
always liked salsa and Mexican foods but since surgery all I can think
about at meal times are spicy foods. Tonight I mixed my tuna with pureed
dill pickle and horsradish sauce. Guess we change, hey? Oh, by the way,
today I hit 39 lbs. since the liquid diet before surgery. Yea.

I do, big time. Like U the hotter the better. If you don't have any stomach
issues, you should be OK. Always check with your surgeron.

Talk to your doctor about ULCERS. Salsa (and many spicy foods) has
ingredients with much acid. I am not saying that this will cause it, but
just be sure.

Hi Jennifer. I had WLS (RNY) 9/2006 and have lost 136# and at my goal
weight of 185#. I love hot, spicy food too. My experience is that you must
try very small amounts until you learn what you body can tollerate.
My experience is that people somehow expect to return to old behaviors and
this does not work. You will soon have a new body and new habits to
replace the old ones that were problems for you.
You must learn to be patient with yourself. WLS is not the
solution.Changing your behavior is the solution.

Give your self some time to fully heal and discuss it weith your Doctor,
but usually, spice is not a problem after you are healed completly.

I dont have an answer. I was actually eager to see the answers when I read
this as I was wondering the same thing. Glad to hear so many of you
tolerate spicy food still so well. I love them and was hoping I did have to
give them up.

I eat spicy foods all the time -- NOW. But I stayed away from such things
for about 6 mo. after surgery -- to let things in there get fully healed. I
especially like hot salsa on Mexican chow.
