Question:
Does anyone know anything about TX Rehab paying for RNY? Do you have to be disabled
I work and am not diabled but heard that Texas Rehab will pay fou the surgery. My insurance has an exclusion clause. If you know anything about it please let me know. How do you get started with them? — Shari (posted on July 12, 2007)

Hello! I was approved through TX Rehab for the RNY. It was a VERY long
process, but since I too was excluded from this surgery by my insurance, I
had no choice. I had to show that my obesity was affecting my work and
that my job was in jeopardy if I did not lose the weight. Then I had to go
through several steps and see several doctors (that they choose) before you
can be approved. Advice: Ask for the specific steps you will have to go
through before you start so that both you and they know where you are in
the process. Also, you are one of a hundred cases that they are working
on, so you will have to STAY on them and make them stay up to date on your
case. They will probably not see your situation as "needy" as
others, so they may put you on the backburner. Also, if you are denied at
any point along the way, ask specifically why. I was denied along the way
simply because they needed additional documentation. HOwever, they only
told me that I was denied, not that we could proceed if I got the
additional documentation. I scheduled a meeting with the district
supervisor to meet with him personally to see why I was denied, and then
needle him to tell me what documentation was needed. ONce I provided it, I
was approved. Also, keep ALL of your records and documentation from them.
They will lose half of it and rely on you to provide it. It took about 9
months for approval for me, and that was with me doing most of the footwork
for them. If you rely on them to do all of it, I think it would take
significantly longer.
