Question:
Hypothyroidism after RNY
I am three years post-op and now showing almost every sign of hypothyroidism (with the exception, fortunately, of weight gain). Has anyone experienced this? Please give me your input... Thanks. — dl_roark (posted on January 27, 2006)

Well, because a thyroid problem is an inherited condition it is not related
to a person having WLS. I have thyroid problems in the female side of my
family and I am the only one that ended up with Grave's disease. All my
sisters are hypothyroid, I am the only one that ended up hyperthyroid. It
is very, very unlikely that this occurred because of you having WLS. It is
a condition that needs to be treated by a doctor and for you to have
regular bloodwork done, especially if you are put on any type of medication
for you hypothyroid condition.

The symptoms of hypothyroid are very common after WLS.... I.e. dry
skin/hair, constipation, cold intolerance, depression, decreased hunger,
fatigue. These can be symptoms of many conditions or normal variation. If
you think you may be hypothyroid you need a blood test to determine this. I
had the same symptoms and I am normal. And also having this surgery would
not make you hypothyroid it is something that would happen on its own.

Iwas diagnosed with hypothryroidism in my 5th year post op. Nobody else in
my family has this diagnosis. My thyroid was often checked when I was MO.
Who would think that once I maintained several years at a normal, healthy
weight I would get the hypothyroid diagnosis? Oh well. Taking synthroid
is no big deal.
