Hi Debbie, Gosh you are caught between a rock and a hard place. I'd definiately talk to my WLS surgeon before cutting back on protein, that can have major consequences. It sounds as though your stone surgeon doesn't understand your WLS diet. . . .Certain diuretics (water pills) or calcium-based antacids may increase the risk of forming kidney stones by increasing the amount of calcium in the urine. . . .From the Internet: "If you've had more than one kidney stone, you are likely to form another; so prevention is very important. To prevent stones from forming, your doctor must determine their cause. He or she will order laboratory tests, including urine and blood tests.". . . .My brother has had a couple (knock wood I haven't) so I know they can be very painful. . . .Best Wishes!

Did they say what kind of stones? Oxalate (calcium types) or uric acid? The diet would depend on which kind it is. Most of "us" get oxalate types. We avoid brown liquids (cofee, tea, cola, caff or decaf), green leafies (waaaa, I have to treat spinach like candy!), nuts, seeds and other dietary calcium, expecially calcium carbonate. BUT we take calcium citrate to help avoid more stones. One urologist told me that if you go 5 yrs without a repeat, you drop back to the same risk as the general publc. All righy then! Christmas will be 6 yrs!

I am 6 years post and I just had my first kidney stone last month they were going to do surgery when it finally passed on its own. It was oxcilate calcium. I pretty much keep away from the foods on the avoid list. Even though there is some on there I love. But the biggies on there I don't drink or eat anyway. Caffene. Or I eat very little of it anyway. Also if you drink alot of water during the day you are flushing your system out as well. Your urologist should tell you that. Keep up with the water. And minimize the foods that are on the avoid list. Good luck

i am 6 months out and i had my first stone 3 months out. it didn't pass on its own so he surgery- my doctors said it was because i wasn't getting my 64 oz of water in. he also said to drink 2tlbs of lemon juice in the morning and night. plus stay away from apple juice and cranberry. it has helped so far- no more stones

Yep, had kidney stones just before 3 months post-op. It was horrible and I posted a question/warning about it on here. If you search the library, you will find more info.
