Question:
Is Apple juice good for the post op?
having surgery on friday, wondering if stocking up on apple juice would be good for me — MAHALA J. (posted on April 22, 2003)

Apple Juice has tons of sugar. About as much as soda. If I ever drink
juice, I mix it with water...just enough to get a taste of the juice. 3 or
4 parts water to 1 part juice. I do this only once a week or so. Crystal
Light and sugar free koolaid is a better choice in my opinion. As far as
vits go, you will take 2 multi a day so you wont really need the vits in
the juice.

Make sure it is 100 % natural, with no added sugar you need to read the
ingredients for this. In the beginning you will need to dilute it 50 50 (
with water ) Don't buy a lot of juice a couple large ones will do you. All
juices have sugar in them, some are natural ( 100 % ) we can have these, it
is the ones with the added sugars that you need to avoid.

I am still preop (June 27 is my day!) but I just had my nutrition consult
Monday and the nutritionist said no fruit jiuces until well after surgery,
say 6-8 months... too much sugar, may cause dumping.

Apple Juice has alot of sugar, I am pre-op, but I am diabetic, so I buy the
childrens Apple juice, still has sugar, but not as much, and if you delute
it with water. Gerber has about 11 grams of sugar and regular Apple Juice
has about 40 grams of sugar. Hope this helps

As an immediate post-op I diluted apple juice and cranberry juice with AT
LEAST half water but usually 3/4 water. I remember hardly drinking an 8 oz
glass a day. I DO NOT know how I did not end up back in the hospital
dyhydrated. 5 months later I drink Crystal Light, tea & skim milk. I
started with the skim milk about 1 month post-op. It was all I drank for a
long time. I suggest trying really hard with as much water as possible.
If you are out of the habit it's tough to force yourself to get back into
it. Good luck! Oh, and remember - I don't suggest buying a lot of
anything as a post-op (especially the first month) because your tastes
change SO MUCH! I remember not wanting ANYTHING and I would like something
one day and not the next. Needless to say I wasted a lot of food/drinks.
Even now my tastes change daily. I know I'm not the only one who goes
through this.

I drank apple juice in the first couple of weeks post op with no problems.
I don't drink it now because of the carbs but in those first couple of
weeks it was a good thing. I only drank small amounts and once I could have
shakes and yogurts, etc... I stopped the juice. Also follow whatever your
doctor tells you to do. They are all so different. In the hospital they
served me sorbet and gatorade which are both loaded with sugar and while I
don't prefer either one they were acceptable immediately post op. Good
Luck!
