Question:
Do they do RNY surgery on patients with Cirrhosis of the liver?
I HAVE CIRRHOSIS OF THE LIVER AND HAVE BEEN TURNED DOWN BY TWO DOCTORS FOR THE RNY SURGERY. I LIVE IN MICHIGAN. DOES ANYONE KNOW OF A DOCTOR WHO WILL PERFORM THIS SURGERY ON A PATIENT WITH CIRRHOSIS? HAS ANYONE HAD THE RNY SRGERY WHO HAS CIRRHOSIS? — RENEE S. (posted on February 21, 2002)

Renee, If your cirrhosis was caused by hepitatus you will have a hard time
finding a surgeon to do surgery. If it was caused by diabetes or obesity,
you may be able to find one. You did not say how your cirrhosis was
caused. I hope this helps.

If the cirrhosis is due to alcohol abuse you will have a hard time finding
a surgeon. Alcohol in any quantity is bad news for the RNY pouch. If a
doc thinks you did or do have a drinking problem they would probably take a
pass.

I have heptatis C and damage to my liver (not cirrhosis but damage). My
first doctor took a look at all my test and my surgery is scheduled for
next month. I would call Weight for Life in California and ask one of
their specialist. Good luck !
