Question:
Will I be able to donate blood after WLS
I have been donating blood since I was 17. The only time I haven't was when I was pregnant. This is very important to me. I've now given 3 gallons. Does anyone donate post-op? Surgeon reply would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. Niki — Niki G. (posted on June 8, 2000)

My doctor forbids it. But then, my surgery is more radical than some.

Hi Nicole,
I'm 7 months post op and I donate blood. I think the
first time was 8 weeks post op. My doctor said I didn't have
any transfusions so it is perfectly fine to give. I was
afraid the first time I gave that I would feel weak or dizzy
but I was fine. I had open, divided bypass with gall bladder
removal October 26, 99.

I was told by my surgeon that donating blood was not a good idea since the
WLS. He was worried about me getting low iron.

My surgeon said no blood donation because of the potential for iron
deficiency problems. I understand and respect your commitment to donate
blood. It is a valuable service that can save lives. But if your doctor
feels it is not in your best interest healthwise, you should not guilty
about having to stop. There are other ways to get involved in blood drives
that are also very important. Just call the Red Cross. :)

My Dr. said I could give blood, but since I have been on the
anemic side before surgery, I decided to wait for a while
and keep taking my iron suppliments til I built my iron
back up. I am waiting until 6 months postop.
